Can lightly or moderatly rusted steel be painted on? I want to do a mod that requires the metal to look rusty, but I don't want the rust to chip off. (Clear coat the surface of the metal)

Hmmm, well is it solid. It can be painted (I know from touch up work behind a wheel well) but if the rust is loose of can pull off, there goes your pain job. I wouldn't just paint it though because it would just look a like a bumpy paintjob. Now clear coat is another story. Having never clear coated a piece of rusted metal before, I cant be sure, but having worked with it before, I would guess that it wont. Give it a test, and find out, but my feeling is that it wont adhere properly.

mod with rusted metal look:naughty: that could be interesting. If you have extra rusted scrap give it a try, and see that way... Sorry, lot of writing for not much of an answer:p

That's okay, it might spoil the rust's dullness. If the mod comes together it should be very nice. ;) but keep it quiet.

Both. Although the look is more important than the texture.

yeah thats works....or you can sand whatever you want rusted, put it in a tub of water(or hydrogen peroxide) and apply an electric current to it and it will rust real good

then just spray a clear coat over it to seal it in and bam you got preserved rust

I want a weathered bare metal look, as if it had been left in the rain for a long while. Either of the methods will work, but I'm more concerned with longevity. And keeping my clothes rust free. :D

I know how to make rust, 1398342003. When I do PCB etching (for electronics), I have this mixture of some powder and water. If I lose a screw or anything metal into the mixture, it rusts in a matter of minutes. The same thing happens when you leave it in Coca Cola for a few days. :eeek:

:waah: I'm not dumb. I can make the rust, I just want to make it last longer.

Clearcoat will make it last longer (or forever). But why do you want to paint over the rust?

I think Zap's idea is the best, you could use a normal anodized/painted/whatever case, and have the rust on top of it, and the rust wouldn't spread through the case. It might be a little bit annoying if your PSU suddenly fell on your motherboard  The shavings might come off relatively easily though, you could clearcoat it and see what happens.

I only want to do an acryrlic clearcoat! So that the rust doesn't come off onto my hands!
