I haven't had any problems with my xbox drive being painted, just make sure it's completely dry and you don't have globs of paint on it, or it can screw it up (cd being stuck to tray haha or too much paint slowing it down)

You can paint the tray without problem, but I would highly recommend you pick up some vinyl dye for it instead of regular spray paint. It's much thinner and will wear better. You can get vinyl dye at any walmart or similiar place, its with all the rest of the spray paint.

Yeap, Vinyl Dye is a lot better and easier to use when you're working with plastics.

One thing though, I wouldn't dye the part where the CD rests.

He can dye that part. When the cd spins it's not actually resting on the tray anymore. The internal parts lift the cd up while its being read. The only time the cd rests on the tray is during closing and opening and the dye can resist that little bit of wear for awhile.
