Sorry if this is in wrong forum, if so please move it.

I have a CD Rom here which I took the inside out and need it for a project, what i want to do is paint it a better colour than the grey/whitey colour it is now. How would I go about this? I know I would put Primer on and then spray paint my choice over top of that, would I need to sand or anything also?

    Thanks :>

for plastic you do not need a primer.

basically, sand it so that it is completely smooth.. it may have a texture at the moment that comes from the injection molding process used to make it. of course this bit is optional, but using 1500 grit wet and dry paper to get it very smooth is in my opininon the best way as it is likely to give you a better shine, and not as many lumps in the paint

then get the colour of your choice, and basically just keep the can around 25-30cm away from the surface and just "dust" the paint on, in long horizontal strips, dont worry if it doesn't coat the part entirely on the first time, it is meant to happen like that... If you mess up anywhere, let it dry overnight, then sand it off and start again :D

Wait 15 minutes, then repeat the above.. then wait 15 minutes then repeat the above..

you now have 3 coats.. all you have to do now is let the part dry for 24 hours, then using a clear laquer, give it two clear coats, slightly thicker coats than you would do than with the color.. dont polish it or anything for like 2 weeks though as it takes that long to fully cure.. it will seem to be dry after a few hours, but deep down it isnt. :)

    hope you find that useful

And after that if you want a really nice finish apply some rubbing compound (you can get at an automotive store) and rub it till your arm is sore. Then apply some turtle wax (also used on cars) and buff it till your arm goes numb. Then look at your reflection in your new paint job. :p
