    Hi all.
I've just received a new floppy drive and i want to replace the standard LED (of course), but i cant find any info on which LED will match. Does anyone know the specifications of the standard LED? I think it's a 5V but do i need to know what current it uses (ie. 30mA)?

    Welcome to the boards, brumster.

The bad news is, if you were thinking of a blue LED as a replacement, floppy drives ahve a bad habit of not working when you mod them like that. In most cases, the drive appears to work fine and is recognized by the OS but refuses to read any disks. :grr:

I know mine went this way, and I've heard a lot of reports of it as well.

Sorry that's not specifically what you asked, but I wanted to set your expactations...some people have been able to make it work. I'd say just bang a blue (or watever color) one in there and hope for the best.

Well, I've managed to do it succesfully. I used a 3mm blue led (30mA/90mcd) and it went pretty smoothly :D
Just need to find some blue/red 2colour LEDs for my CDRW now :eyebrow:

    AFAIK those don't exist.

So if you find some, make sure to let me know, I would like to order a few.

OK. I've seen these three pin LEDs about but I have no idea how they work... is the original LED in my CDRW gonna be one of these, and allow me to do a simple swap? Fortunately, I've been very lucky with them so far. My floppy drive and the case power and hdd activity LEDs all work as straight replacements. Even tho the white power LED is so bright i can barely see the blue hdd LED :eeek:

I've also just changed the amber LEDs in my new DigiDoc5 for blue ones I had to source from the US (with the help of my bro-in-law). Since the last time i picked up a soldering iron was about ten years ago, I'm pretty happy not to have destroyed anything (yet). As for these blue right-angled LEDs; I received 6 due to minimum order and used 2, I have... erm... 4 left over. Anybody need a couple of these?

On another note, I've been checking out some other mods on bit-tech and many involve circuit boards that people have made themselves. How can i make custom PCBs without using that awful cardboardy-looking stuff. Sorry about all the technical lingo ;)

Ya would need to use an RGB LED for that!

Three pins are usually tri-colour - ie red + yellow leds and both lit gives orange. To replace with something like red and blue - you would need an RGB LED the normal LED style of RGB has 6 leads! and has 2 blue LEDs + 1 red and one green.

Let me know if ya need any LEDs cos I am a modder who builds baybuses and that means I can get decent LED prices so I sell em on cheaply to fellow modders..

same goes for any other stuff I can get so if anyone needs anything e-mail me and mention bit-tech forums and I'll do ya a good price. I don't view this as dealing - I order plenty stuff so don't pay carriage so can get it a bit cheaper if someone just wants a few LEDs,relays etc but if someone wants a lot of stuff
I'll tell em where to get stuff if I can..
