Imho you just can't say Japanese people ain't that isolated. I've never been there but whenever you read some article about social life and work mentalities in Japan or see a documentary on TV what do you see? You see lonely mid-20's or end-20's working their asses off for their companies, coming home (if they don't sleep in their office to save some time or if they simply don't sleep at all) being pissed by their life getting drunk, doing drugs or trying to relax any other way. You hardly see any reports about the big ****ing Japanese 'Oktoberfest' or anything like that! Japanese are damn isolated as far as I know.
If I didn't get your point... sorry. If you don't get mine... ask me. :)

What did this kid actually think was going to happen when he jumped out his window? As I understand it your character loses HP when you fall from a height in the game i.e. he gets hurt. Seems to me he was a masochistic mentalist.
I'm going to be controversial here. Can we really blame the parents for trying to get easy money out of this? Maybe we should be looking closer at the compensation culture and how easy it is to sue these days.

We can all talk about how the parents should be punished for willfull neglect, however there is really not enough evidence to support such an aligation. From what I read, I don't even know if the family had a history of mental illness, or the child was suffering from any sort of depression.

Depression is a serious disease and it is easy for us all to ridicule some 'stupid foreigner' for thinking that he could fly. But it is possible, as cronic game playing would suggest, that he was having issues coping with his day to day world and used the game as an outlet for his frustrations and eventually broke down. I have my doubts that we are looking at an average child in perfect mental an phisical health.

Blaming it on the parents for not doing enough to help their kid isn't exactly helpful either. Parents are not gods and, unfortunatly do not instently receive any extra intelligence as soon as they have kids. They likely just lost the most important thing in the world to them and I am sure would trade any law suit for their child back.

I think that became obvious when he killed himself over a video game.

So since WoW is a game-activity... People could also sue sport coatches, teachers and others who made their children involved in the activity in some way right?

    JUST WTF?

It is ridiculous... If you tought your child some moral values and the line between real and virtual then he/she should be fine... It is not like The kida was captured, brought to a dark room, had his brains washed out to play WoW and kimhimself if he loses... Damn probably those parents were even paying the monthly bills for the game... How to prove it was a game... maybe he was trying to forget bigger mental issues by immersing himself in the game, however when that did not work he just decided to fly like a rock... No normal person would kill himself from losing one game... So most likely the guy went a long way to get to this point and if parents did not notice his depression or something well why to blame others?

Soon we'll see DANGEROUSLY ADDICTIVE stickers on gameboxes...

With people minds like that, in next few months we'll read guidlines:

"wife sues court for moral damages when after their previous case was denied her husband killed himself"

if this leeds to cerfues and restrictions people will start moving away from legit servers...

only the parents are to blame no1 els, these cases should be an indication of bad parenting and the parents should be dealt with accordingly. they obviously cant handle the child and dont want to deal with a tantrum if the child cant get his way.

IF and a big IF a game has caused someone to go crazy and kill people, its actually not the game that caused it. that person had something wrong with them upstairs allready and it would have been a matter of time before anything els would have triggered them to flip out if they never played games.

passing the buck is just to easy these days. i want to sue the law for allowing sue'ing to happen so freely. pffff... really silly

this takes me back to the jerky who shot himself over EQ. I, at the time, was an avid EQ player as all my friends will most surely attest. It was such crap, because the industry was being blamed for this psycho popping his head off with a .22 (wuss gun anyway), and more notably the parents were trying to sue Sony for "killing their son." Last I checked he squeezed that one off, not Sony.

I was an EQ addict, a HUGE UO addict, and definitely addicted to CS. Now why is it that I never killed anyone, had violent outbursts, or died of starvation. Whenever I locked myself in my room for 3 days and didn't come out and put blankets over the windows to block out the cursed sun I remembered the essentials: 3 cases of soda, licorice, cinnamon bears, jerky, pizza, and microwave chimichangas. Not to mention adding a minifridge and a microwave to my room, just to minimize break times.

Speaking of which... why is it UO, arguably the most addictive MMORPG ever never killed anyone, at least that i've heard of. I remember talking to my friends like "let's do something productive like play basketball or something" and so we would go to play and just end up standing around on the court talking about UO.

These people can eat my old copper platemail legs.

Surely game makers will WANT that on their boxes?? Like the "warning: explicit lyrics" on CD cases. It'll end up cult.

I think we're leaving out the fact that this kid was only 13 years old kids do stupid things out of curiosity. Certainly we all did stupid things when we were a kid. Heck, when I was 7 or 8 years old I used to jump off our old shed with an umbrella thinking it would allow me to slowly drift back down to the earth. Granted it was only 10 feet high, but you get the idea.

Blizzard is in no way responsible for this kid jumping to his death. It was just a tragic accident, nothing more.

    Dungeons & Dragons.

    Need I say more?

When that was the popular activity in the early 80's a few kids managed to kill themselves leading parents to freak out about the horror of D&D. Now it's video games. Just something else for them to blame besides themselves. And, in many cases, I remember reading that the child involved had mental development issues of one type or another.

In this case it was a 13 year old. I think that's more than old enough (for someone with full mental capacity) to know that falling is going to hurt and to be able to separate fantasy from reality. So either the parents really raised the kid wrong or knew that their child needed extra attention and didn't provide it.

Partially agree. We DID stupid things like jumping from the garage but sane kids know that jumping out of a window brings pain and pain = bad. Have you ever tried to do something that surely would kill you when you were like 12? I haven't and I don't know anyone who did. It's not you're braindead while being less than 14 yo you're just a kid (sometimes it seems to be equivalent but that doesn't matter in this case ;) ).

Totally agree with this one. As I mentioned before imho it's just trying to blame someone for yourself not being capable of raising a child.

    i have several questions:

    A) did the parents trow the kid out the window and sai that it was because of the game and sue blizard so they could get some quick cash out of a child they did not like (smells like a conspiracy :worried: )?

    B) did the kid sing "i belive i can fly, i belive i cant touch the sky" while e was falling to his doom?

    C) if i had a family member that jumped of the WTC who should i sue? the companies that make airplains, the taliban or the company that sold the tikets that did no have the setence " this plane might go against a building" or "your chair might end up in a office room" :wallbash: .

    D) i must sue "mary poppins" because a lot of kids leaped of the roofs of their houses with a umbrella and broke their legs :sigh: .

games dont kill people, stupid people kill people and them selfs.
i play a lot but i know when i am hungry i must eat.
here people play sometimes 48 hour in a row but they eat and drink and dont die. do not try this at home kids and dont sue me for saying this

Jack Thompson is a g** m***** f**** and should burn in hell for being an idiot.

    Hi there,

I think the ones to sue here are the parents, because they couldn't set limitations up for their kid, or beause whatever else could have happened. If you give life to someone, I think that you have to make it safe and healthy as long as the child is able to think by himself...

Well, in my opinion, nobody should have ever died because of video games, at least the ones you have to pay in order to play on them, because parents that can pay for their kid to play should be able to raise their children correctly enough to make them understand what life is and what games are...

I bet nobody here understood what I really meant, but I don't care !

Asmadeus, silly chantress of Solusek Ro that's addicted to EverQuest - or at least was :) (don't tell me there were server merges and that Solusek Ro doesn't exist anymore, I don't want to know : bless the unknown !)
