I hope thats real, she should be demoralised and brought back to the real world. That simple life program should have done it, but she was thick enough not to notice it was ripping the piss out of them.

Alas, the truth is that she will have layers upon layers of psychological defense mechanisms buffering her from interpreting her experience in any other way than narcissistic paranoia (i.e. they are persecuting me because I am special).

Many (born) rich people think that way --and with good reason. Not only do they have generations of practice at reducing their cognitive dissonance (i.e. justify to themselves why they are silver-spooned babies while mere mortals have to work hard for a living), but their normal childhood sense of over-entitlement has been indulged from the cradle onwards. They simply don't grow out of it because they don't get kicked into touch with the limitations of reality like we do. In their rich little world, there simply aren't any.

So this has all come a bit late. She is already entrenched, as is her whole family. And the publicity spectacle that this issue has become has only reinforced her beliefs.

Next stop? When she comes out, she'll (ghost) write a book about her experiences, appear on talk shows all-grown-up-now, and perhaps even do a film (loosely) based on her experiences ("Caged Heat" or something tasteful: see nubile naughty girls comfort each other while dealing with the sadistic attentions of those perverse prison guards). There may even be a deal in it as a spokeswoman for a drink-driving campaign aimed at youngsters. Only in America.

I was with you up until the end. I just have to ask, was there a particular reason you added that last point?

If the British tabloids' attention to the royal family (and the corresponding public interest) has taught us anything, it's that this kind of celebrity spectacle most certainly is not "only in America."

Don't get touchy now. I was just using an (American) expression. I could have said: "Only in vacuous, self-obsessed, sensationalist Western(ised) society", but that just doesn't have the same ring to it.

And yes, the UK is pretty much the same. Imitation is the best form of flattery, no? :D

I am just glad that the judge in this case isn't going soft like the sheriff. I dont have the link although I read that he is a bit dirty himself with similar incidents.

At any rate I have no doubt she will go back to that pathetic and introverted life of contributing nothing to society totally unaffected in the end, signing book deals and talk show appearances on the way to her mansion.

She embodies all that is wrong with the US. And just like this, I am wasting my time even posting about it....
