I am interested in constructing a system which is as quiet as posible and was wondering if people think it would be posible to not use the cpu fan cooler on a Noctua within the Antec 182 case? Are the quad chips too hot to consider this even without overclocking? What is the experience of people without G0 revision quad?

    Thanks.

You need some airflow, and the noctua is incredibly quiet. Remember a quad is still TWO dual core CPUs in the same space, so you've still twice the thermal envelope.

I have seen many reports of people using the Q6600 (non G0 stepping) with coolers including the Scythe Ninja, without a CPU fan. In some of these reports, a need to set the case fans to ensure some airflow across the CPU cooler was explained. Not recommended if your going to overclock it however, so yes - should be even more possible with the G0 stepping.

Okay. Interesting. I guess I could direct the airflow to pass through the cpu cooler and then out the fan on top of the case. I read about a guy doing this on silent pc review. He used a dual core chip in this case -- the E6600.

    Thanks.

Some good articles on passive cooling on that site, worth checking out.

The article and some forum threads I read used an Antec P180/2 case and the best way they found was to set the top fan to be an intake fan (at low revs) because the CPU heat sink was just below it. The exhaust then all went through the rear fan. I suppose you could direct the air from the front intake up towards the CPU cooler with a shroud, but it is likely to get heated on the way by the graphics card. A lot is going to depend on the case you use

Yes, it is a good site. I was planning on constructing separate flow areas which would be served by separate fans. Now all I have to decide on is a quad or dual core chip with G0 revision. Will wait for these chips to show themselves and then based on availability I will pounce.

Scan can guarantee a G0 Q6600 for no extra cost. :)

Just waiting for that G0 Q6600 to show up on the scan site - then I shall be first in the queue, was not listed when I checked late afternoon.

I may be second, but only just. These promises of "no extra" cost are worth nought without any stock. ;-)
