Hmm.. I'm not sure *how* much it is, but I'm almost 100% certain is itsn't free. EDIT: Make what you want of these.. I'm guess they'll charge you something at somepoint down the line http://www.patent.gov.uk/patent/forms/ukpatsupp.htm
Think its £10. My bro's mate was thinknig bout patienting an projust he did at school. They inquired he sasid it was £10.
doesnt cost anything, but takes a long time, and you need to have a laywer to do all the legal booolocks....
Getting stuff patented does cost money, it takes a long long time, there are US/UK/EU patents and (I believe) a paitent is not forever (ie you need to keep it updated.) As mentioned Lawyers fees will be high as it is necessary to check all existing products. The LCD was patented by a chemistry student at my Uni (Hull University) because the University were too tight to stump up the cash. I believe that his perants re-mortgaged their hows to cover the cost of patenting it. He is the winner now While I was doing my PhD my research group (Medical Engineering) was in the process of getting a patent. It was deffinatly not a cheap process. Meblin
Yeah Meblin is right. If you like, while you are waiting to get your patent (and this is only a TEMPORARY thing) you can type up a very detailed description of your idea and include any pertinent information. Then print all of this out and mail it to yourself. When you receive your package, dont open it! You can do this while your in the process of getting the patent, and since it was mailed its proof that you had the idea first on that date it was mailed. This works in the US, but not sure anywhere else..
I believeit's called a poor mans patant/copyright. I don't know if it works out side the US. I remember a friend who was developing a RPG system was goin to do that, but he was US based. Good luck with your idea. Becarful who you tell, if it's a very good idea, or they might try and get it patented first. This is what started to happen to my friend. They aproached someone to make a prototype and they said no and then suprise suprise they had a very similar design marketed (nowhere near as effective though) Meblin
As far as mailing something to yourself, (at least in the US), you have to make sure that the materials that you mail are sent by REGISTERED mail. If not, they are inadmissable in court.
its not really patenting if you mail yourself, thats copyright. when patenting youre not supposed to tell anyone before you get the patent
