All this pay-as-you-go and fair-tolling and stuff is ok in theory.

But I am not happy with the fact that they are tracking everything I do all the time.

But there is one advantage I can see to having a 'little black box' in your car - it would make it much easier to track down stolen cars and catch the thieves.

    whats next, privatisation of roads.
just imagine, you get dfs and mcdonald running "road companies" and advertising on the telly,
"Try the A342, half the price of government roads,90% pot hole free, no added speed humps, drive now, pay nothing until next year!"

I quite like the idea, just as long as they scrap road tax then.

I don't think it's fair at all for someone who travels 30 miles a week to pay the same amount of road tax as someone who travels 1000 miles a week, in an 18-wheeler lorry!

Just as long as it's reasonably priced.

As for them knowing where we travel etc, well, if they want to they can do that anyway, and probably do sometimes, so I don't see what the fuss is about. Plus, as previously mentioned, the system would double up as a great stolen vehicle tracking system :thumb:

Because with the amount we pay for insurance, running costs and road tax I don't think the public would take too kindly to an additional motoring cost - actually paying for driving on the roads.

Isnt road tax going to be removed if this is introduced ?

If the road tax is still going to be there, then this is an absolutely stupid idea.

IF the road tax were to removed then this would really be a fairer system maybe.

What about if you're someone who drives a lot, or drives recreationally. Personally, I love driving, and I've been known to just go out for a drive to calm myself down. If I knew i had to pay to drive on the roads I were motoring on, I'd be slightly pissed off.

I think it's only fair since you'd be putting more wear and tear on the roads than someone who drives maybe once a week to the local supermarket.

As I've said before though, as long as they scrap road tax, and the 'pay-as-you-go' fees aren't stupidly priced then it's a good idea.

So someone who has a car, but never goes anywhere should pay the same as someone who is driving around all the time ?

And thats fairer than a 'pay-as-you-go' system ?

As said above, if the system is implemented properly, this would probably be better.

No, clearly someone who has a car but never goes anywhere would not pay anything, and someone with a car who travels 100 miles a day would pay whatever the pay-as-you-go rate is.

It does have its possibilities... such as...

abolisment of speed traps, bumps traffic calming etc... getting rid of road tax etc..

but also if this were to be tied into some nasty speed restriction thing where it meant if someone was turning in without loooking and you are in their path you cannot quickly and safely put your foot down and escape..

plus on empty country lanes you couldn't let yourself have some fun... which would also bring a point of why would you even need a nice/fast car if all cars would be restricted...

but ... if you were in a crash with someone the blame could be determined acurately

also if we paid money to use our cars... would we have to pay for petrol?

the only thing that could happen to petrol prices is that tax could be reduced, but what are the chances of that!!
