    Hi All,

Just currently planning to put together my very first rig but, upon planning this, I have stumbled across a potential problem. Due to space constraints, I want the PC located on my TV stand (it's a big ass stand), and connecting this to both my plasma and a monitor. Reason for this is that it will be used as a HTPC, gaming pc and a server. I was going to run a hdmi cable from the system to the monitor, which will be located 7 metres away, which should not be a problem. However, I have just realised that I now have an issue with the mouse and keyboard. As this will be used for gaming as well, I would of preferred wired devices, but USB only stretches to 5m. So, it would appear that I may have to go wireless, which I did not want to do. Anyway, what are you experiences with wireless keyboard/mouse for gaming? Will lag have a major affect?

Does anyone have any advice or alternatives to overcome this?

    Thanks

Also, can anyone tell me if the following is a decent build

XFX HD 5770 1GB XXX Edition GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card
Antec 902 Nine Hundred Two Black ATX Case - No PSU
Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3 P55 Socket 1156 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
    Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz Socket LGA1156 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor
    G-Skill 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 Ripjaw Memory Kit CL7(7-8-7-24) 1.65V
    Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache

I'm a first time builder too and from what I've read and been told around this forum is it might be worthwhile to hold off on buying the processor until Intel release a new CPU, which should be pretty soon. Also, maybe upgrade your selection of the 5770 to one of the newer 6xxx series boards AMD have just released.

But if you want to save money then wait until those are released and get your parts for cheaper! :D

Also, from my extreeemely limited knowledge of all thing's hardware that the i5 750 is an awesome processor but if you're planning to max out games on a decent high-ish resolution monitor then the 5770 would be your bottleneck. I've read good things about the new cards from AMD so it may be worth checking them out.

    Good luck mate

Also, since i can't edit my post (under the 10 post limit so far) i forgot to add that from my extreeemely limited knowledge of all thing's hardware that the i5 750 is an awesome processor but if you're planning to max out games on a decent high-ish resolution monitor then the 5770 would be your bottleneck. IMO that graphics card isn't a good choice with the new mid-range cards about now.

Why get the i5 750 when the i5 760 is the same price and runs slightly faster?

Have a read of the i5 760 review on this site done recently?

As for the graphics card it depends on your budget but you can get a GTX 460 for about £30-£60 more or the new 6850 for about £100 more.....if your tight on budget but have some room get a GTX 460 its far superior than a 5770....

Any decent 600w PSU should be fine for that set up..

latency due to wireless will have an effect on your gaming if you play games that need fast reflexes. when i was checking out wireless low latency mice about a year ago, the razer mamba stood out as the best of the pack, (eg:http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/22/razer-mamba-wired-wireless-gaming-mouse-impressions/) but its about 100 quid.

i very recently bought a blaze wired mouse for 10 quid since i needed a wired mouse quick. it is brilliant!

so when i needed a wireless mouse (2 weeks ago), instead of doing research (which takes me loads of time since im detail oriented) as a temporary solution for controlling my pc from across the room i just bought the blaze wireless mouse for 13 quid http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/item-detail.php?products_id=4369082 - sufficiently cheap it would be ok if it didnt work right. im very happy with it.

i havent done any "testing" to see what the latency is, but my impression is that i can play avp and l4d with no issues (its not perfect in l4d2, but i think the major issue is my laptop is not powerful enough - i still dont have a gaming pc, as avp2000 feels fine). it could also be that im not latency sensitive anymore, its been 6 months since i gamed (just getting back into it now that winter is rolling round).

im now going to get a wireless keyboard as well (next week I guess). will report back with latency impressions and valid key combinations (eg: S+A+shift+space) if you request.

edit: oh yeah, a very long usb cable/usb extender will also increase latency, but i dont know how much.

Thanks all for your help. Will make the step up to the i5 760 I think, only about £15 difference in price. Also, will ditch the 5770, I thought it would bottleneck the system. 6850 is a bit of a stretch to far but liking the look of the GTX 460, only £60 more so stupid not to. I am having issues selecting a motherboard. Looking at about £90-£100, so anything around that amount. I would like the option to sli/crossfire at a later date. Anyone got any recommendations?

    Thanks again all

Personally I'd spend more of your budget now on a decent MB/CPU and RAM. Get a cheap(ish) GPU, perhaps something second hand like a GTX280 (just an example, I have no idea on the price!) and in a few months splash out on a better GPU. You'll stave off upgrading for a fair while, but also have a much better system.

If you share a small/medium budget on all the components instead of heavily investing on one area, your teach will fall behind the pace fairly quickly. I'd go for the i7 930 and get a pants card for now. Whats your budget? Oh and stay away from wireless peripherals!

edit: Oh and I play using my TV as a montior. I have a fold up chair and a laptop table (Dave from Ikea) and just sit closer when I'm playing and put it away when it needs to function as a TV.
