Ok so ive never owned a console before and decided to take the plunge and get one. So was wondering how long is it going to take to become as good on controller as I am currently on the pc?

Depends how good you are on the PC :p

All i know is... I'm HUGE on the PC, But absolutely suck on consoles... Partly because i hate them and partly because I've never had enough patience to get use to one.

I'd say a month to get any good maybe?

    Never. :thumb:

If you don't fail completely at every game on the PC that is.

It shouldn't be that hard to get used to the controller.
But if you play PC games with the mouse sensitivity up real high you'll miss the responsiveness of a mouse.

I certainly do when I play TF2 on the Xbox vs PC.

    This^^

If you're used to a mouse, then FPS games will feel fking weird I'm telling you. Most other games arn't that bad. A pad is always better for racing games, beat'em ups, and platform games. With RPG's and RTS's it depends on the game. A pad works well with some but not so well with others.

fps sucks on a controller, thats why you need auto-aim.

I would get bored with a console, for me tweaking, overclocking, modding trying out different combinations of settings is as much fun as actually playing.

I agree. I wouldn't bother playing FPS's on a console if you still have a PC. Racing games, fighting games, arcade and action games, they are all good on a controller though. Was there something specifically you wanted the Xbox360 for?

I nearly bought a PS3 a few years ago, but I ended up borrowing my friends for a few months and I realised that I just didn't like any of the games. I think out of them all, there was only a couple that I could be bothered to play, and even with those, the fun didn't last long. One was Tiger Woods 09 and one was Streetfighter 4. I think once I had completed SF4 and unlocked everyone, I was done with it and would never want to play it again. But I'm a PC gamer and always have been so I'm not really suited to console gaming.

Get a PS3 instead. Most Xbox 360 games come out on the PC and are better for it, but PS3 exclusives stay on the PS3.

My 360 wouldn't stop breaking down...it kinda ruins the experience, plus you have to pay for multiplayer and put up with the incredible noise.

I find it quite difficult to be as nimble with a 360 controller as I am with a mouse & keyboard. One way I find helps is to play a game on the XBOX that I've already played to quite a high level on the pc and try to get as good on the XBOX - still working on it. An alternative is to play a pc game with the mouse & keyboard and they try it with a 360 contoller on the pc, still not that great mind you.

By the way, if any of you are tempted to buy one of a number of gadgets that claim you can plug a mouse & keyboard into a 360 in place of a controller - DO NOT BUY ANY OF THEM!!!
The main problem you will have is that the sensitivity is appalling, you would be able to hit something about the size of a tank but human size targets are reduced to pot luck and you can forget headshots unless you are standing right next to your target.

is this because you can get a mouse and keyboard working with the ps3
or is this because 360 exclusives come to the PC too?

    or neither of the above?

However, if you're a racing fan, you might want to look into a 360 just for Forza 3.

I'd say at least a month. Depends on the types of games, because FIFA 10 may require a tad less button combos than Super Street Fighter IV, and so on.

Xbox 360 has very few exclusives that would make it worthwhile. Most games available to Xbox 360 are ported to the PC anyway. If you are only buying one console I'd also go for the PS3. Then you at least get some good exclusives, and a blu-ray player.

Actually a lot of 360 exclusive shooters (and other games, such as Forza 3) are no longer being ported over to the PC. A lot of games that are on both the 360 and PS3 are also not as well made on the PS3 because the developers are a bit lazy when it comes to cross platform releases.

They're both good consoles though, I own a 360 but I wouldn't mind if someone dumped a PS3 and games in my lap :)

It all really depends on which exclusive titles you want to play.

As for getting used to a controller, it shouldn't be too difficult to pick up. Main problem I have is different games can control differently with the left stick. For example, Halo 3 the look starts off slow then speeds up, whereas CoD doesn't have that slowing effect so relies on you only nudging the stick slightly for a small change in aim. After playing a lot of CoD it feels very weird going back to Halo 3.

That's down to preference i'd guess, because on the flipside the only PS3 exclusive that i'm remotely interrested in is LittleBigPlanet.

I used to play singleplayer on consoles all the time and my first time playing Halo online I was playing splitscreen during a snipers game and I stopped in the middle of it quite a few times to type out long text replys to my friend and I still came first way ahead of anyone else. (That's not really that great, Halo players are rubbish in general).

A few months not playing and now my brother who I used to have no problem against whatsoever can use me as his whipping boy faily easily.

I don't think it will take that long though since when I started playing CoD4 on Xbox I did better than I did on PC, it really doesn't requitre fantastic control.
