    Hi,

The xbox 360 and PS3 are for release within the year as we all know.

I hear the software makers banging on about how they are taking great attention to detail IE down to a blade of grass or stitching on a footballers shirt for these consols.

I haven't noticed PC game makers mentioning this?? I know HD has been around for years on PCs. The screenshots for the new consols look superb.

So, Will these consols have better graphics than a half decent PC???

I had the fortune to play around with a FX57 and dual 7800GTXs £3000+ pc set and I tell you that fecker kicked some serious butt. Now I don't know how it compare to the consoles but if they are even better we are in for a treat. BF2 looked absolutely stunning, so did the fear demo.

By the time the software developers can properly take advantage of the new console's potential PCs will probably have caught up. Look how much more powerful the GF 7 series is over the 6 series.
And now that games are going to be developed multithreaded for the new multi core console CPUs, they will be on the PC eliminating the bottleneck even an OCed A64 FX offers to a 7800GTX SLI setup.
And consoles will still run at the crappy resolution TVs are stuck at, HD or not. So surely all the extra detail is wasted?

The reason for my Q is that I am seriously considering upgrading my PC to a good gaming machine.

Then my mate showed me some flyers and adverts by games makers and all this talk of extra detail made me wonder how the hell can the PC keep up.

The last thing I want to do is spend a grand on a PC only to have anyone with the new consols whoes spent a third of a grand to kick my new pride and joys arse!! :duh:

Im stuck wondering what to do now. What would you do and why?

Go PC! Personally I hate consoles. And you can't upgrade them when they start to get a bit dated, which admittedly is going to be a while.

Yes, the new consoles are substantially powerful than the current generation, but much of the ho-har surrounding them is the move to HD. Current SD TVs, existing consoles and DVD players are limited to 720x576 or similar. I'm not going into PAL vs NTSC - suffice to say it's basically 640x480 or sub 800x600 on a PC.

The new HD modes start at 1280x720 and go up to 1920x1080. Most gamers already game at 1280x1024, and many with top-end systems routinely game at 1600x1200, so honestly, PC gaming isn't too far behind...

Unreal Engine 3.0 is licensed for both next-gen console AND PC, so providing your hardware is current, you should be able to enjoy top titles in similar detail in my opinion. The fact that console gamers will have paid less than £300, and you will have spent £1000 or more is the difference. However, considering they'll need to spend £1000 or more on a HD plasma screen, possibly the PC gamers are up on the deal.

Then again, for £1300, I think I'd rather have a plasma screen and Xbox 360 than a 7800 PC.

You can fix this slightly by plugging it to your LCD or Computer monitor maybe?

This is true, but try typing an email, while you have an IRC client running, a chat program or programs, a media player, and numerous other multifunctions all at the same time on an console. PC's are just so much more useful, imo. I'd like to see someone code something on a console :p

dunno, HDR buggers out on my computer. Well, in farcry. In SC:CT, it's just downright uber.

I absolutely despise consoles now, probably more because I'll go and map every single key on my keyboard to something in an FPS, and that doesn't happen on controllers. Yeah yeah, hi-def on consoles. I game at 1600x1200 and if my monitor was widescreen, I'd happily do 1920x1080 (1080p), with all the good stuff. And PCs are just more fun, I mean console mods are pretty and all, but they're never much more than a paint job, quite the contraty to PC mods. For what I've spent on watercooling, I could probably have all three current consoles at their current prices (regardless of the fact my family already owns two), and I view the watercooling as a much better investment. Sure a bigass TV is fun and all, but I don't have the space for one and computer monitors do higher resolutions anyways. Maybe if a 42" LCD was like 4096x2304 (rough uber-res 16:9) I'd be interested, but that's not the case. Bigger pixels, who needs 'em?

If we take all the tec talk of of it for the mo as there are only the likes of us bothered really. The average lad on the street won't even know what a pixel is.

So - that said. The new Need for Speed Most wanted. Will it look better on the new Xbox or a good gaming PC?

It's running very nicely in 1680x1050 in the highest detail with HDR enabled on my 7800GTX :naughty:

I just wish I could have FSAA but at that res you really don't need it.
