your folding rig isnt the best ppd/watt or ppd/$ with smp bigadv i7-860 running 3.8-4.0 275 watts. ppd will vary 21,000ppd on a 2684, 31,000ppd on a 2685, 33,000ppd on a 2686. add a couple gtx460 to that and your minumof ppd 40,000 and a high of around 50,0000ppd. the i7-860 is us $210 at microcenter.com

"you can now get a 1GB GTX 460 for £170. That's excellent value for a card that soundly thrashes a HD 5850"

    It doesn't.

the affordable all-rounder is good but i feel its getting to expensive. £485 without an OS is quite a lot for some one looking for an entry level gaming machine plus they have to factor in a monitor too.

That was my initial thought too after looking through the guide. I've just bought a 460 1GB and will be buying another for SLi as soon as I can afford it. The performance is pretty much 100% extra fps with 2 of these and 2 cost less than a 480 or 5970. :D

Single card solution is better for a brand new PC."

except that when you decide to buy a second card you'll need to replace the mobo, psu and case...

better over getting sli (8x8) suitable psu and case now rather than have to upgrade everything in a year or so when you want a cheap doubling of performance (gtx460 now about 110 quid)

Gotta agree with the others here, SLi should be used.

The premium player would be better off with 2*GTX 470's. The cards cost less, they are significantly faster, they allow triple screen gaming without needing to buy an expensive display port adapter, you get cuda, physx, and 3d too.

Gaming workhorse wouldn't manage 2*GTX 460's in budget with your system, but if you look at overclockers you can buy a ready made system with 2* 1Gig 460's, i5 quad core pre o/c to 4 gig, etc which would blow away your suggestion and you don't even need to build it.

So is the i7 950 considered a bit of a lemon along the lines of the 465?

I'd like to see some GTX460 2GB SLi vs 5970 4GB data given how the 1GB cards snap at 5970 I think they'd trade blows and give a sneak peak at GTX495 performance.

A comment on Page 2 of the review reads:

"That's excellent value for a card that soundly thrashes a HD 5850..."

Really quite a bit of exaggeration and if you wish your article to be completely objective such comments should have no place in it...

My next upgrade should be the following components

    Intel I5 760 (aiming for a 4GHZ OC)
    Asus Maximus III Gene
    2X GTX470 sli
4GB Kingston Valueram 1333MHZ (Dont know how much of an OC this will give my CPU)
    This comes to 1099 euro

What I have now and what its replacing

    Replacing this

    Intel Q6600 @ 3.3GHZ
    DDR2 800MHZ ram @ 821mhz
Asus Maximus Formula with Rampage Formula 1002 bios
    XFX GTX280

    I have

Corsair 800D (Want to replace this noisey heat box)
Corsair HX1000W (Waiting to RMA Because its noisey)
    Corsair H50 CPU Cooler
    3X 250GB Maxtor HDDs in raid0
    Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB

Any suggestions on a case with good HDD dampening (To prevent HDD Humm on my desk) and good cooling performance. Money isnt a problem.

made me think then 3gb RAM was like ? you can go into the forums and edit posts

you would expect the prem system to use sli gtx470 or gtx480 as overall it works more consistently

I cant see whats wrong with the upgrade I am looking to get. There wont be any bottleneck from the CPU PROOF and 8X x 8X PCI Express is good enough with a minute difference to 16X x 16X PCI Express PROOF

Power consumption is largely a non-issue with 460GTX SLI - I've yet to see more than 450W usage on my system (measured from the wall, so including 75W for a 30" monitor and 10W for the speakers) though I've yet to overclock it.

The downsides with dual-GPUs are cooling (2 hot cards close together) and some games not working effectively with more than one card. However these apply to the 5970 also while the 460GTX's current price point makes it a more affordable option.

One question about the Premium Player - why is the Highpoint Rocket card still there? Not only does that configuration lack the multiple identical drives needed for RAID but the motherboard itself has RAID capability.

This. I'm sort of disappointed there's no mention of this anywhere in the guide or even on the site.

And there's no mention of Core i5 760, which is essentially what the i7 930 is to the i7 920, and has been out for a while now.
