OK about a week ago, for no apprent reason/warning PC just decided to restart, so i waited for it load again, thinking "dam windows" - BUT its just done it again, and im wodering WHY?? - is my PC trying to tell my somthing?? - do i have a steathy little virus in there?? im running AVG (daily), and Spybot S&D + adaware6 (weekly) - its my win2k machine (see sig) any idears ??? - thanks daniel
I had this problem not so long ago with my machine and it turned out to be a few diffrent things here is what i did and it solved it. 1 - Check window sis fully updated 2 - Make sure all your drivers are currently up to date 3 - Make sure u have suffice cooling the machine maybe restarting becuase of temps Hope this helps Richman
I have been having that same problem. I think it was when I got some beta video drivers for my graphics card. I juts updated them, and hope to have no problems now. My computer would always seem to reboot while winamp is playing also. May have been a coincedence. After booting back up again, I do the error report thing, then it tells me that it thinks it is driver related. I then updated my video drivers. I had the nvidea 56.06, then I updated to the current ones on their site today. I hope it fixes the problem. I have a GeForce fx 5600 128meg btw. What kind of error report comes up? Does it take you to the ms site or anything? Also, you update avg, I am assuming? As well as ad-aware6? I duno what spybot offers, as it seemed to be a spyware prog itself when we put the trial version on a pc at work. EDIT: woohoo... 800 posts
ok - i'll have a go with that - new drivers etc - also im runing win2k (see "mine"" in my sig) so do i get an error report?? - all AV etc in 100% up-to-date - ALWAYS
hmmm... I think you should get an error report. I am not sure. I can not remember if win 2k has that part of the error reporting or not. Also, is that ram of yours double sided or single sided? also, are they the same manufacturer/speeds? and what are you temps at? and volatges as well I suppose.
- i'll look for an error report nxt time it happens - ram, both are double sided, the 128stick is Kingston valueram and the 256stick is Major "extraRAM" (no expense spared ) - temps and volt are (imo) pritty good
I maybe way off here but have you thought it mught be hardware related? A faulty psu has done strange things. Hope this is not out a' line. good luck
yeah, havent rule that one out!! - as i didnt build the PC (its a TIME!!) not all the componets are what i would have chosen!!! - altho, I've added/replaced a fair bit!! [edit] WOOT!! 100 posts!! (again) - so that would be 273!! (i got 173 as "dhutch") [/edit]
cpu fan = 0 ? is it watercooled? or on air? if you are watercooling, or have a passive heatsink/zalman dealie, you might (depending on mobo) need some load on the cpu fan header on the mobo .. i have to have the rpm cable hooked to mine or it wont boot ... and thats whether the bios "cpu fan fail" option is on or off ... im not drawing power off it ... but it has to be hooked up ... just a thought.
- im air, the CPU fan is run (7v'ed) of a floppy plug, but its been like that for about 2years, no problem
hmmm... Try running the CPU fan at 12v instead of 7. I see that the core temp is at 47*C at about 29% load. I would expect the temps to rise at least 10 deg C at 100% CPU utiliztaion duuring games and such. Also, try using one stick of memory. If the computer locks up with one stick, but not the other, than the memory is bad.
This might help you identify the problem: turn off automatic restarting on errors - in system properties; now instead of restarting you will be presented with a bsod, this should give you more info as to what the problem is. Hope this helps
yeah, but it doest happen during high cpu used, just ramodnly when im doing nothing!! - and also temp dont acctually get that high, 51-52C max!! (and cooler if i clean then H/S)
hmmmm. You wouldn't heppen to have any spare PSUs you could try in your computer then? Or maybe try the memory thing I said earlier. EDIT: Also, try asking some local computer Shops. Sometimes they have some valueable input. Also, if anybody has suggestions, go ahead and suggest.
yeah, please do!! - i'd try the memory thing tomorow if i can, and maybe i'll try the PSU out of the new comp, which i would have done earlyer - exceot i spent an hour tidying cable only 2 weeks ago - and i might ring my (not so) computer shop [edit] - been running MBM for about 2 hours, got to 50C, slowed the fan and got it upto 52C, bumped th fan back upto 7v and i when back down to 50 in about 2mins - and it would be cooler, if i cleaned it out [/edit]
as some dude said up there, it restarts in winamp, i have the same problem with Windows media player, when ever i play 1 song, then another without shutting WMP it crashes, after i started useing winamp it stopped ...BTW im running XP home and my PC used to do it every 5 mins, but it hasent done it since i used winamp *well, its done it twice in about 2 months* so dunno what the problem is, but your not alone P2D
yeah, mine only did it a few times, and hasnt actually done it once sice i posted this (maybe i knows its not wanted any more )
- did it again it was running winamp and soulseek (only) - and it came up with the BSoD (seen below) - then, after i hit the reset button, about 30mins later, it reboots (just as if somone had hit the Reset Swh) can any one tell be what the significance of this BSoS is? thanks again, daniel
Looks USB related. UHCD.SYS is the USB hostcontroller. Try unpluggin ALL USB device, including hubs, then see if the PC works ok or not. read more and here
