A short article from The Register

Damn californians, why can't they just live in the real world long enough to figure out how stupid they are?
When have you seen a computer advertised as 76GB Useable Capacity.
NO, CAPACITY. OVER-ALL, THEORHETICAL, GET OVER IT.
You know what, I'm going to sue any company who's off on anything. This bag of chips is supposed to be 14 oz, it's only 13.5! I'M SUING!

    dolts.

But the usable space is dependant on how the drive is formatted :sigh:

Exactly. They choose to have it formatted in FAT/FAT32/NTFS etc. Should the manufacturer have to state the approx. capacity in every single file system known to man?

Way back in the mists of time, I bought a 286 system for the lab with a 20Mb MFM HDD. Dos Chkdsk said it was about 23Mb with thousands of bad sectors.

WTF? said I. The dealer said it was a little trick they used, they told FDisk it was a bigger size, and FDISK would try to low-level format every scrap of surface, giving more than the rated capacity and the bad sectors were off the disk edges. :naughty:

I left it for a few weeks, no problems, but finally chickened out and re-formatted to the rated size. :worried:

Next they'll be complaining that PC3200 ram doesnt give exactly 3.2Gbit of data transfer and SATA150/ATA133 etc doesnt give those speeds all the time.

These companies, in their drive pdf's state that its 80gig unformatted space. Im pretty darn sure of that.

    Morons.

It's bad enough that people are suing for a fly farting the wrong way, but what's even worse is that THESE PEOPLE ARE WINNING!!! The dumb*** that sued McD's for her own self being clumsy won several million dollars, if I remember correctly. If these people will read the fine print from those PC manufactuer's, they will see that the stated drive capacity is UNFORMATTED CAPACITY.

EDIT: Or the defense team for the PC manufacturers can pay one of us big bucks to testify for them and prove these numbnut people wrong. :D
