You might need a Win 98 PC to run some really old games as they won't even work on XP. I recently made a Win 98 PC for all my pre XP games. edit: I hope this isn't another of your troll threads that i've stumbled into
Does compatibilty mode not work? What about a virtual machine? As for clocked a P4 to 4ghz, you'd need to hefty cooling, dont think there's many mono's that can handle the overclock but I could be wrong, just never heard of it much
Virtual machines are a pain in the ass for games. The original Call of Duty is happy on Windows 7, though. About the only games I've had issues with are Homeworld (Really doesn't like any GPU from about 2007-onwards) and Grim Fandango (That shiz just needs Windows 98.)
You won't need to run a P4 at 4GHz to run those games, I remember playing most of them on a P2 350MHz with no issue. To be honest you could probably install XP or 98SE on to a separate hard drive in your current computer just for those games. Advertising that PC as Powerful with 2x 3GHz is a bit over the top, it would be more like 1.2x 3GHz if you are lucky. It probably could run a 520, basically you'd need to make sure that you choose a card that doesn't need any extra power then the PCIe slot would provide, I.E. no 6 or 8 pin PCie connectors. Any monitor should plug in so long as it has the right connector.
Played both of them, completed homeworld running in widescreen on a 9800GTX+ SLI setup not too long ago, and there is a 32 bit installer for Grim Fandango floating around the web.
98se on an i5 2500? That'd be interesting to see. I don't think the drivers exist for XP/98 for anything new than the GTX 200 series, though. Hokay. Seems Homeworld just doesn't like my PC. Flickering menus and have to force Direct Sound off, else it just grinds to a halt somewhere.
Good point, if you were to go down the old PC route you'd want to get an older graphics card, like a 6600GT that has drivers.
Have you tried just using the compatibility mode in windows 7? Here's a quick overview of it: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html
i dont think there is any point in it just for a few games unless i could play them on my current pc of course
Virtualisation might work. I know VirtualBox does support D3D rendering inside a Virtual Machine. But it's glitchy. I tend not to bother because it's so unstable.
why dont you just partition your HDD and install an older OS on there? seems easier than buying and finding room for another machine
