ok i belive this to be a motherboard that has gone but just want to check

my machine will post fine then when it starts detecting devices it sees the CPU then nothing, none of the IDE or SATA drives.

this happened after the latest windows update including the optional graphics one for my 8400 (yes i know its old)

so what would you guys think it is?

Can you get into the BIOS setup?
    Are the drives spinning up?
Do you have a modular psu and the drive power cable is maybe dislodged.

So does it look for devices, succesfully complete the search and just not find anything or is it freezing while looking for devices?

I would say motherboard but I suppose it could be an add-in card (GPU/Audio etc.) knocking it out, its not unheard of.
Test anything else you have attached in another machine (if you have one) to rule that out.
    How old is the mobo?

Try unplugging all hard drives and CD ROM/DVD Drives. If possible just have one stick of RAM installed. Then boot up. Can you now get into the BIOS and do you get the message regarding the lack of system driver to boot from ?

most likely dead.. if you have another 775 board, try your parts in it and see if everything works.
