I went for a bit of shopping on monday and I popped into to PC World for a wonder around. I got as far as the small Apple section they have there and was surprised to find a Macbook Pro. Not only that it was running windows! They were advertising the new bootcamp features to try to attract some new apple switchers. I didn't think I'd see the day they could get a member of the purple shirt brigade to do something that complicated!

I took a quick picture with my mobile to show it in action, they'd even installed 3dmark on it

I was very surprised to see this at pc world!

getting an apple to run windows requires one of the new intel based systems, which limits you to iMacs, MacBooks and minis...

apple has unfortunately not been very forthcoming to the general public with what they plan on putting intel chips into next.... but with the release of the 17" macbook, i would think additional releases in regards to iMacs and minis might be out soon, though they might update the powermacs... who the hell knows...

apple stores will be the first to know as apple tells them what products to begin to prepare for phase out (hence why you saw a drop in production of the 15" powerbook prior to the release of the macbook)

boot camp will however be a feature added to the next version of OS X, which means it's likely all apples will be swapped to intel chips by that point

...now you can buy an Apple to have OS X and Windows.

On the iBook point, it's likely Apple will simply release a cut down version of the MacBook Pro and call it the MacBook. Slower processor, less RAM, and a less powerful GPU.

i think because there is the option of having windows on it.. its going to be a big sales point "here we have a mac, but you can have windows if you prefere"

i dont think the processor or ram are going to be a huge issue... i just think that now theres the bridge for people to experiement with mac as well as return back to windows if they wish. Only unfortunate thing is that Microsoft still get a cut. Means we will never get rid of them!

Out of interest where they selling it with Windows, or just demoing Boot Camp. If they are selling it with Windows and Boot Camp pre-installed I'd be interested to know the price.

They also sell all Intel macs (iMacs, Macbooks, and Mac minis) with copies of windows. My neighbor bought his iMac like a week before Boot Camp. Damn, I wanted his copy of Windows Pro (he wouldn't have used it). :D :sigh:
