Hi all, my new pc has a asus p7p55 lx mother board which has 2x 16x slots and a single 1x slot. The 1x slot is right under my double slot 5850 so clearly it would not be wise to use this. I am thinking about getting either a pci-e tv tuner or sound card (prob sound card if I'm honest). Could this be put in the 16x slot without effecting the number of lanes to my graphics card, as i read that it would half the number if a second card is added. Cheers

And you've noticed no slow down? awesome. Wish company's would think about slot placement more. I'm not intending to add a second graphics card anyway, but it would leave me with 2 pci slots....which are fast becoming useless....

According to the manual for your motherboard you've got 2 1x slots underneath the blue 16x slot (though obviously you can't get to one of them at all because of the double cooler on the 5850).

Anyway, rather than altering the available lanes between the slots by adding a card (which does happens on some boards), reading further then the blue slot always has 16x physical & electrical available (ie it has 16x pci-e 2.0 lanes assigned to it), but the black one is 16x physical & only 4x electrical (ie it only has 4x pci-e 2.0 lanes assigned to it despite being physically 16x).

So, obviously accepting that the anything that needs more than 4x 2.0 lanes will run slower in the blue one, you should have no hassle with what you're suggesting.

I can confirm this works great. I have a 5870 in the 1st slot and a Xonar DX in the 2nd slot and I haven't had any issues with slowdown.

The interface clocks to the speed of the card inserted (so PCI-E x8 devices would still work when PCI-E x16 was released). So yes it will work as long as you heed the advice above and ensure CF is disabled :)
