Im looking to adapt a pelt on on my next project and i want to run it off something. The problem is that I am looking for a pelt that is decently high wattage (160-230w) and the thing is that I dont really want to buy a pelt psu as those range in the 120-230dollar range. So I am wondering if I could pick up a crappy pc psu and run it dedicated for the pelt.

Also I may run two pelts in paralel but lower watege pelts if I run em in paralel.

So anyone have any sugestions? Or solutions. I do not want to spend more than 60bucks including pelts and psu.

    thanks

how much are the pelts you want?

one of those would probly be around 60 bucks, the psu, you can get a crappy one for like 10-20 bucks, but might as well get a nice fortron 350w or so for 35 or somethin

Don't expect to be able to run it on a 350W ATX supply. That's 27A on the 12V line. A decent 500W may just do. :jawdrop:

Would it be easier for him to get a descent transformer and a couple full bridge-rectifiers? Pelters dont exactly need regulated power. Then he could trigger it with a relay.

Where can you get decent transofmers? I would guess that any capable of 27A on 12v would be quite expensive???

do you have to run the pelt at 12v? I thought they just required a DC that wouldn't kill them!

    Upto 15.8v is normal iirc...

But I think at maximuim voltage they are suppost to be less efficent.. but stil more powerfull..

I think a 12v car battery charger would be good.. they usually are cheap, and can do high current...

I will be buying a 650w psu mutch like the one I own and the pelt is rated to run at 15v so at 12 it should use less amperage. The psu I have has a 22amp rating on the 12v rail and its been runing for a year and change and the voltages are stable as a rock and the bright side is that the psu only cost 35bux. All I have to do is find the shop I bought my old one and buy another one.

EDID: I found the shop and they still carry the same psu.

Not usually both together though. http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=28469

    That is one monster pelt.

I think a 550W ATX psu may end up the cheapest option.
