The 680i is fairly good in this regard. I dropped the Evercool VC-RE cooling my Southbridge to 50% in BIOS and the noise dropped right off. If things get hot in the MCP it ramps right up again, love them automated controls! On full speed the VC-RE drops a good 20 degrees off the original stock temperature I was getting, so I'm very happy with that.
Just took delivery of one DELTA AFB0812SH! It has a none standard header and in comparison to regular case fans the red and yellow have swapped positions. So I did a little mod on some 3-PIN fan extension cable swapping the positions for the red and yellow contact points. Tested it out and the thing literally took off for a couple of seconds! I guess these Delta fans can really push some air! So it works, but is this mod safe to use on a motherboard fan header? Like I mentioned, ideally I'm looking for a little fan control via BIOS for the nForce fan header on my 680i Motherboard. Thoughts?
Just got you in PM. In case anybody else is wondering, most motherboards' fan headers are rated at 1A; there are a handful of "enthusiast" motherboards whose fan headers are rated at 2A, but that is very much an exception to the rule!
Cheers! Now where are my damned cable ties! I'll have to take pictures of my full metal 680i when finished!
Job done! Increased the exposure so you could see the fans spinning! That's my 680i cooled anyway! Once I attached the Delta server fan the motherboard temperature dipped below 20 degrees so it must be linked to the Northbridge somehow. Also the Delta does sound like a jet engine at 100%, it lowers to a minimum of 50% through the BIOS but that's still very loud! Hoovercraft loud though and not a Mig! I think this will be my next upgrade... http://www.maplin.co.uk/fan-extension-cable-with-switch-98964?c=froogle&u=98964&t=module Certainly in the crazy but cool category!
Keeps the fan extension wire out of harms way and also limits any give should the Delta slip a little whilst spinning at its stupendous speed! I so need that on/off switch though, I plan to build it in to one of my 690 II PCI slot brackets which is made of hardy metal. So it should look quite nice once I've finished it!
