I was just wondering which type of performance tyres (if you chose tyres based on them being the cheapest you were offered, dont bother posting), everyone here chooses and uses, and why.

I'll start off with my 185/60 14" GS-D2 Goodyear Eagle F1's on 5J alloys, because I've heard from a lot of people that they're a great summer tyre (though still much better than the old generics in the wet), and was considering a set when i discovered that the existing front tyres were borderline legal, our local tyre place fitted them for £1 more than I could find online, so I decided to buy them. They cost me £115 a pair and I consider them well worth it, but dont do what I did and just replace the fronts, then the backs a week or two later, replace all 4 or be prepared for hairy moments in the wet if you've got generics on the back.

I would have liked some uniroyal rainsports or falken FK-451 or FK-452's, but they don't come in 14" sizes, and the current wheels really suit the car in my opinion.

The car is a 1.2 Vauxhall Nova (Corsa A), in the process of being upgraded, brakes and suspension are next, followed by engine.

Toyo Proxes or Eagle F1s are my tyres of choice. I've got some Yokohamas on the back at the moment and they're great in the dry but in the rain they make putting down 220bhp at the rear quite "exciting". Toyos next time ;)

Yes, the Eagle F1s are fantastic. The general thoughts for safe handling (though not necessarily "fun" handling) are if you need to replace your front tyres, move the rears to the front and put new tyres on the rear. That will make the car tend to understeer rather than the "hairy moments" of oversteer you mentioned, Xen0'.

If you don't mind not driving (or driving and crashing lots) in the rain then Toyo Proxes R888? ;) Seriously though, Eagle F1s would be my recommendation to most people.

Remember to post pics as you upgrade your car :D

F1 GSD3 tyres meet my requirements, amazing grip in all conditions (except perhaps snow :worried: ) and really cheap to buy (4 for £120 :D ) they also get a good write up from the research i did before buying them.

I have found Toyo Proxes T1-R great in the wet, but I haven't tried them on my current car yet.

Sorry, but why the hell are you bothering with a Nova?

No offence, but even if you make it do 150mph+ (which I have seen on very modified Nova's), its still rubbish.

    To make it less "rubbish"?

Decent tyres are probably the one thing that any car can benefit from. There is a limit to where the improvements become less noticable but good tyres improve handling, braking and even acceleration (some cars more noticably than others).

    Why wouldn't you bother?

Have you driven a car with "normal" budget tyres and then with "performance" tyres? If you have then you should know how much difference they make. For the sake of the price difference, I'd put "performance" tyres on any car I owned.

I think he's trying to say why: upate brakes, change tires, etc on a crappy old nove...

why don't people atleast buy good old school cars and do it or good new school cars... why not do an old schoool crx for instance, or just buy a generally better car for all the money being spent...

But if your tyres need replacing anyway it only costs a few extra quid for the good ones.

grrr, lol i have nothing agaist that...

i just don't understand why people buy corsa's for instance and get rims, lower it, exaust system, air filter, mesh grill, a body kit, bucket seats, etc
when for the same money they could have got like an Supra, and still pimped it out a little.

you see someone with a basically modded corsa, you think 'n00b', you see them with a supra, you think lucky ***** or whatever you think...

Because it still costs them less in petrol and less in insurance and they can be a part of "the scene". Why do people overclock when then can spend more on a faster cpu?

But I do agree with your analogy. A highly modded small car makes me laugh. There's a line of subltly (SP?) I dont think people should cross.

I know what you are saying webbyman and I totally agree but we are talking about tyres here. Any car will benefit from good boots and they all look pretty much the same so it's not really in the same vein as fat exhausts and silly bodykits.

I would feel happier and safer if I knew everybody on the road had decent tyres with plenty of tread left.

Tyres have an effect on pretty much every aspect of a car - safety and performance. Upgrading your tyres a bit different to prit-sticking a bit of mesh somewhere where it shouldn't be.

Nothing wrong with xenos, you can do anything with Novas, cheap and great fun.
    I'd love to see it.

    ^ I agree entirely.

*less in petrol and less in insurance* which would otherwise be wasted on a passenger tft to watch the Milkshake - Kelis video... and insurance does go up a fair bit on any insurance due to any amount of modding.. almost stock < heavily modded?

    anyway, i'll shut up now.

Im sorry for PooP'in all over your thread about tires, *but we arn't trying to be so narrow minded, by giving the broader picture? or stereotypical?*

"Tyre" and "tire" are both right.
