I just wanted to see which technology people will root for, and which I might buy next year.
So, perpendicular recording, or a hybrid hard drive?

Perpendicular recording is likely to be employed in every hard drive around by next year.

I'd be surprised if there is a hybrid drive around which doesn't use perpendicular recording. It isn't a matter of one or the other.

Sure it matters. Perpendicular recording's main point is to increase the size of Hard Drives. Hybrids have many power saving and performance aspects.

They will be aimed at different markets.

750GB Hybrid......I think not........at least no time soon.

Yeah and there arent any 500GB 16MB HDs out there...

Mister_Tadis right. Think about it - they can compliment each other. Perpendicular = higher data density = fewer platters to contain the same storage = less power = selling point of hybirds.

Perpendicular recording isn't a "feature" of new hard drives, it is simply the natural progression of things. Data density has always been increasing and perpendicular recording is simply something to facilitate this. It isnt just the 750GB drive that uses perp recording, it is also the smaller drives in the range. The smaller ones use fewer platters but still have the same data density.

I would like to say hybrid because of the access times...however flash memory has a huge problem....if power is lost ..even for a milisecond..your data will be gone.. so ill wait untill the new technology can be proven to be stable......but i would love a 15 second bootup time.

ahh bugger, does that mean that all of the stuff I just threw on my mp3 player, usb stick and memory cards will be gone now that its unplugged? :eyebrow:

there are even some (expensive) laptops that are now using solid-state drives as a main system drive
The idea of a hybrid drive is to get most of the advantage of solid state storage without sacrificing overall capacity

Which is going to get used in sandwiches eventually, bacon, lettuce, or tomato? Would like to know which one you all think will finally win out over the other two.

that's not meant to be mean, just pointing out the type of question it was

Your gonna see that perpendicular drives are going to thrive in the PC market while hybrid drives and entirely flash laptops are going to drive the laptop industry wild. They're both going to thrive in their own markets, but perhaps perpendicular drives will cross genres and make it into desktop replacment laptops like the XPS range or Alienware MJ12 brands.

Of course they will. Perpendicular will be used everywhere, especially laptops and portable devices. The fact that you can have so much more data per platter guarentees that all hard drive will be perpendicular.

You're mixing up RAM (highly volatile, quick) with NAND flash memory (not volatile, slightly slower).
    Hybrid drives will use NAND.

thanks Ramble, so does this mean no onboard battery would be needed?

NAND flash is the stuff used in your USB memory stick; it doesn't require a battery to retain data.

no you're gonna still need one of them or you've got yourself a nice £1500 piece of modern art on your desk...

Yes he does, just not on this particular topic.

Fair enough, I think that's what roto sequence meant, that he had no idea about this particular topic.

There has been a fair bit of wrong advice given recently, I've been starting to notice things that are clearly wrong being said. I know it's just people trying to be helpfull, but generally on bit-tech someone does know for sure, so people who aren't so sure, should maybe either do some research, or just leave it be.

That said, everyone has to be prepared to be corrected sometimes. We all make mistakes(apart from me, but I'm unfallable) and the great thing about being in a place like this is that, those who teach learn too.

Yeah, maybe. Though I was agreeing with roto in further shame of the person in question, as it is obvious that 0lly_l3w15 doesn't know much on this topic (other than the bits of information he's been unfortunately misinformed about).
