I have a 17W peltier pump. It's rated at 8.3V at 3.5A. What would cause damage to it if it had to run at a higher current?

I assume you mean by increasing the voltage? Worst case it heats up melting the solder on the wires and becomes one large insulator. Best case nothing. Are you willing to take that risk? Also 17W is tiny.

    8.3V x 3.5A = 29W

rember theres two powers listed on pelts.

the number of j/s that the pelt can transfer and eletrical power on pelts

its max transfer is prob 17W

    and its electrical draw 29W

    Ai, you'd be correct Mattt!

Today I ran it at 12V from a PC power supply, besides the wierd (but faint) smell it produced, I just froze my finger that it actually hurt.

I know 17W is tiny (comparing it to my 85W Pentium 4 CPU) but it was all they sold!

But, here are some pics with it running at 5V. I have it resting on a heatsink which is in ice/water. The warming side faces the heatsink and the cooling side is facing up. I turned it on and after a while I so some condensation on the surface. I dripped some water on it and in a matter of seconds, it was frozen. In these pics I put an entire layer of water on it, check it out.

um is that pelt potted? it doesent appear to be

because it doesnt appear to have sealent around the edge, and i think i can see the semi conductors.

which means you realy shouldnt be using it like that without additional insulation, because you could damage the pelt and possibly the power supply its connected to.
