Oh my holy unsalted peanut! The price of petrol is becoming so gosh darn expensive. I'm going to start work on a supa powerful electric motor. Okay, so I won't go as fast and as far as a normal car, but at least I won't be forking out all my cash just to drive to the shops! I already have an idea. I just wish I had the neccessary tools (lathe, mill...)! Sputnik
Approximately R4.30/litre. My friend wants to pipe hydrogen directly into a lawnmower engine first for testing, then into a car. But I'm hesitant as hydrogen is some seriously dangerous sh!t. I plan to have the lawnmower engine started remotely by an electric motor on the other side of a field and have fuel injectors regulating hydrogen fed to the engine. Better safe than metal shrapnel in your body! Sputnik
OMG, 37p for a litre of petrol, that is friggin cheap, better get to SA and fill up my car then! That is just over a 1/3 of the UK price! If you were in the UK, you'll be paying R11.6 per litre!
Wow, I didn't realise you guys had it so bad there! But, when you don't have any income or pocket money like me, it get's very expensive! And R0.75 interest/month isn't very helpful. Sputnik
I'd be interested as to how this nitrogen lawmower project goes. You shoulld post some sort of project log when you get round to it
Err...you mean hydrogen! Nitrogen is an inert gas (a halogen). Okay, maybe an electric car is a bit to ambitious, perhaps an electric scooter. R7 000 is a bit much for one here. Hydrogen lawnmower project. You'll love this! Log ---> Many, many moons ago. Hydrogen made by reacting aluminium foil with casutic soda in 2l plastic coke bottle in a bucket of ice water (To prevent bottle from melting, highly exothermic). Fed pipe directly into carburettor air intake and pulled the rope. Few orange flames out the ... exhaust "hole" (exhaust sawed off). Perhaps one revolution caused by the ignition of the hydrogen. A pull of the rope or two. "BANG!!!" Hydrogen flooded the carb and started to flow out. Ignition inside combustion chamber ignited hydrogen in carb. Orange flash. My friend almost burnt his hand severly (he was holding the pipe). Ahh, the good times!!! Problems: -I think the rings are worn and so there is absolutely no compression whatsoever. -My friend broke the rope recoil spring -Need fuel injectors -Car starter motor -Electronic ignition I'm very keen to get this project started. I would like to hear your suggestions on a name. H2O is the way to go! Sputnik
Oops, I made a mistake. I went to the filling station today an the price of petrol is R5.60/litre! Cost me R220 to fill my 40 litre tank which is expensive!!! Sputnik
Lol, if 4.60 is 37p. Then you've have to get to over 10.00 a litre before you got close to ours. Does that put it in perspective? Our fuel costs waaaaaaay too much. It's some of the most expensive on the earth.
Don't you US's dare complain! Unleaded pence/ltr - - United Kingdom 96.5 - - USA 37.5 Diesel pence/ltr - - United Kingdom 94.8 - - USA 38.2
Man, and I thought I had it bad with 3 dollars a gallon here! I bet you UK'ers LOVE your public transportation. If gas were that expensive in the US everyone in the the suburban and rural areas would have to go back to riding horses because there is no public transportion at all.
Only the folks who have good stuff do. I mean, it all depends where you live. I'm in the north of Scotland, and the public transport is non-existant round my home, and where you can get it its way overpriced.
It's like I've said before, it's not really the actual price of the gas that we are having difficulty, it's how much it's risen and how quickly it's gotten there. Last year at this time gas in my area was about $1.80 a gallon, now it's up to $3.29 and is expected to reach $5 after Rita hits Texas. So we may be experiencing a 277% price increase in the span of a single year. That would be like you all going from 96.5 to 267.3... Also, keep in mind that the US is MUCH larget than the UK and all our industry is dependent on trucking. When diesel gets this expensive, that raises the delivery costs which in turn raises BOTH the wholesale and retail costs of the product making everything more expensive.
