Did the only thing that happened was that they were expelled? I would think assualt charges would be filed too.

Lol... I was just "struck" by the fact the teacher suffered two broken bones in his neck. I skipped the punishment that's for sure. I wonder if the teacher will sue for bodily injury too.

They should be shot dead. Simple solution to an otherwise complex problem.

    no. just no.

People make mistakes, and 15/17 year olds more than most wont think about consequences. The chances of these injuries happening from what action was said to have taken place seems very small. Now they will hopefully learn. Theres a reason the law doesn't apply as thorough punishments to minors as it does to majors.

You're suggesting that there's a major developmental difference between a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old? People who aren't legally of age are tried as adults all the time, which should be suggesting that they are mentally developed enough to have understood the consequences of their actions (consider a couple of the recent cases where <18s took arguably-pornographic pics of themselves; I'm fairly sure they're being tried as adults, which in principle should counteract the CP laws they're being charged under). Age means next to nothing, and is quite probably the broadest generalization around which we could have chosen to base our (U.S., though I'm sure it applies in plenty of other places too) legal system.

Our justice system is screwed up for sure, but neither letting them off the hook nor giving out a life sentence would be appropriate. People do stupid things all the time, and some acts of stupidity are (thankfully) criminal. This was one of them. Aggravated assault charges are exactly what they deserve to be charged with, and when they're found guilty (I don't think this is really an 'if' case), they should be punished accordingly.

We've had that discussion before, Firehed, and although your arguments are all very valid, legally we have to draw a line somewhere. For various reasons it was set at 18. Assessing a person's mental state and accountability in the context of law is a very complex and tricky proposition...

Yes. They are going to wake up on their 18th birthday completely enlightened.

Well with the solution you're proposing they're not going to wake up at all.

a 17 year old isnt much differant from an 18 year old, oh but a 16 year old isnt much differant froma 17 year old, oh but a 16 year old isnt... blah blah.

Like nexxo says, a line has to be drawn somewhere. Some people wake up on their 16th birthday enlightened, some when there 20. Im not suggesting they be "let off the hook", im suggesting that shooting youths for assualt "got out of hand" is way ott.

No, it's not working, but I would argue that nothing, including shooting the offenders in the head is going to work. One of the non-obvious downsides to any socirty is that there will always be some who act out violently. If you remove those people from society, others will take their place. This is one of the things that annoys me the most about discussions of crime is the people who believe that if we just imprison or kill or deport enough people we can have a safe peaceful cmmunity. Guess what, never going to happen. There will always be crime. There will always be violence. Trying to stop it is like trying to stop the wheather.

The school should have installed these.

They are doing so in South Africa. This seems like a viable solution to me.
