I scanned it again last night (I figured out something to sort colour balance and black points out, which I've been really struggling with) and then reprocessed it. I left the original in the comment thread on Flickr
Ah, with a direct comparison, the new one is indeed cracking. What flash is it? Golden Gate Bridge, 'Twixt the Rocks by angad84, on Flickr
We got spectacularly lucky. But the fog rolled in later in the day, which meant we wasted 3 hours in the middle of the night trying to get decent night-shots. Oh well.
El Cheapo £80 Jessops own label one. Couldn't afford a proper EX Canon one, and couldnt find any good second hand ones locally. For what I need to do, its perfect. I've also got a £10 set of B&Q builders lights which I'm going to set up properly as well.
Thanks! I like this one a lot. Love the dead space at the top of the image - I've seen the bridge without fog on a few visits, but most of the time it's been engulfed!
Untitled by Neo - nimajus, on Flickr Just getting to processing my photos from my first Grand Prix; just found this one today Do you guys think it's too dark? Any suggestions welcome. Also is it very noticeable & annoying that the car is not 100% sharp?
Hmm, the car's not perfectly sharp but that's not a big issue for me, and the exposure is fine to my eyes, maybe a fraction of a stop too dark. Please don't take this the wrong way as it's intended as friendly constructive criticism and I know how hard it can be to capture fast-moving subjects, but if I were you I'd have gone for a slightly quicker shutter speed as the motion blur is too much for my taste; also I'm not a big fan of the composition - I like that you've put the car bottom of frame, but I'd have put it a little farther left and looked for an angle with the car either coming at an angle towards the camera or at a much steeper angle away, perhaps on a bend curving away from you.
Is there a bit of an issue with a wide-angle + polarizer combination or is the upper left corner otherwise lighter due to some atmospheric phenomenon? In any case I'd try a subtle gradual darkening from the upper left corner towards the bridge. The sky behind the bridge is lighter as it should be, but there's something funky going on in the upper left part of the sky. If you're using Lightroom, go with gradual filter with exposure set to approximately -0.25 - -0.45. Somewhere around that ballpark should look good.
I agree with the composition, I feel the same way; however there is not much I could do from the grandstand I was at. As for the shutter speed I was playing around with anything from stopping the cars in their tracks and then kept going down to this one - 1/10th I really wanted to capture the speed of the car in relation to the environment it was in. This being my first time spectating and photographing a race ( & doing panning ) I find it very difficult to pan, especially 1/60th and slower. With the racetrack on an S curve, and slight differences in the heigh of the track there were sooo many variables... I needed to move the camera on a curve while turning the lens to follow the car. Anyone know/seen tutorials/tips on panning & long exposure photography?
Thank you Maybe a stop dark, but the sharpness is ok. I'm always prepared to leave a little wiggle room, knowing how hard pans are. It might have been nicer if it was zoomed in a bit more. Yeah, it's a wide-angle+polarizer issue. I'm too lazy to spend loads of time in post I'll give it a fix if I get my essay done later today. Took this on the 4th of July, too bad my computer didn't let me upload it until yesterday. I'm going to clear a huge backlog of unprocessed shots on my new laptop as soon as I have Lion and Lightroom on it.
