What it looks like you are seeing is simple in camera processing. The JPG settings are bumping up contrast and pulling down the blown highlights in the blue channel. So the dark area in the RAW gets darker and you loose the detail in the surf, but the lights ( I'm assuming you mean the blue lit grass areas) aren't quite as blown due to the recovery. Also, since I'm not sure what sort of quirks your sensor has, there are sometimes color channels that handle different kinds of light differently. Nikon is known for having a twitchy red channel that never handles red lights well. FWIW, I would clone out the light spots in the upper left hand corner and leave it all black.

@teamtd11 could it just be the extra color information or maybe the encoding of the JPEG that are causing the loss of details in the dark ares and the over burn in the blue?
