I know the white balance is a bit off but I wanted to make the colours pop.

I'm doing the Practical Photography Camera School course again this year to force me to actually do something with my camera. Module one is a landscape shot. I went out yesterday evening and managed to get a small break in the rain to take a photo. The sky and ground were wildly different though so in the absence of clever filters I had to resort to five exposure and blending them afterwards. I used a natural preset and reduced green and yellow saturation to try to avoid that overcooked HDR effect.

Beautiful picture I love the contrast between the ground and the sky. One more thought no leaves on the trees yet it's half way through may! Do you guys not have a spring there?

It's soft, dark, lacks contrast, and has a lot of colour fringing.

Seems a bit of an ambitious shot in general.

Nope, I just shot it on a bit of a whim really to see how it would come out and it turned out to be my favourite shot of the day. The hardest thing was walking back up all the stairs I'd just come down ;)

How would I fix these problems? I'm haven't used any processing software to fix it, so what are your suggestions aside from getting a tripod?

    P.S. Thank you

It would take too long to salvage that, IMO.

    Basically.

If you managed to nail the focus and maybe get in closer you'd have more options. A tripod with pistol grip may have helped but overall it's a small subject relatively far away from the camera.

If the image were slightly soft you could always use a high pass filter in Photoshop, but really the bird is a little too small in the frame for that.

Just for reference, high pass and sharpening:

Duplicate layer > Select top layer
Filter > Other > High Pass (Radius 1.0 pixels)
(Top layer) Blending Options > Overlay
    Merge layers
Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen
    (Amount - 200%* / Radius 0.2px / Remove Gaussian Blur)

    *sharpen to taste
