Has anyone here installed photoshop (the more recent the better) onto a netbook? My sister is looking for cheapy laptop and I suggested the Eee 904 which I think is fine for her, but she announced today that it will need to run photoshop. I doubt she will be doing anything too fancy with it and she doesn't mind if its a little slow.

Anyone had any experience with something like that?

What kind of PS work does she need to do on it? I'm sure the machine is technologically capable of running it, but obviously applying a bit of Gaussian blur is considerably less intense than stitching shots in a panorama.

Of course, I don't imagine Photoshop being especially usable on a screen that small even if it was hooked up to a Cray supercomputer.

Why doesn't she do what I do and wherever she is...
steal a monitor, plug in the book, and work on a decent sized screen (though I run from an MSI Aries board with a dodgy screen)

I don't think she'll mind. I'll teach her how to press tab (to hide the pallets). Her old laptop was capable of 1024 x 768, but she'd been using 800x600 just to give you an idea of how computer literate she is :p
She only wants photoshop to do render designs of dresses. (She's doing a course in fashion) So the most I imagine she will be doing is the odd mask, opening textures and a few filters and effects.

It sounds like it will be fine.

What about a cheap 15.4"? They're like £350 at Ebuyer or places like that now.

Much bigger screen, dual core CPU, more memory..

agree with bindi, get her a proper laptop. nobody should be forced to do actual work on a netbook, they're just toys. even the dell promo material says they're for the '30 minute internet experience'.

netbooks are ideal for when on the move via plane, train or coach/bus to give internet access, as a form of entertainment. There a 'media' device really not work.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll make sure she knows what she wants it for. When I initially suggested a netbook, she hadn't mentioned photoshop but now she has her heart set on a 'teeny laptop'.

Just one other thing to consider... I 'think' - although it's been awhile - last time I installed Photoshop on a low spec machine it didn't like anything less than 2Gb of RAM. I can't remember for sure whether it was just a warning during install or if I had to use an old version of the software.

Photoshop CS2 and onwards won't let you install unless you have 1GB or more. If you want to install it anyways you have to fiddle with the install config in a text editor. It is not a very complicated manouver but it is worth keeping in mind that Adobe purposely keeps users from installing on machines with less RAM.

If you want her to be able to do some editing on a netbook I think you should look for an alternative lighter program. Or better yet do as already suggested and get her a proper laptop with some decent hardware. All in all she will be much happier with the decent hardware.
Alternatively take a look at a used Macbook as they are both sexy, intel based and come in sizes down to 12" iirc. My GF has the old iBook 12" and she has been extremely happy with it through the last three years.

Thanks for clarifying the point OleJ! I'm sure Will. wouldn't have been impressed buying all the hardware and falling on that hurdle :)
