Sure, you're right with this, but imagine soldering all the wires by yourself. You wouldn't even have a connection that's approved of 133MB/sec So from a hobbiests view IDE cables are still your best chance. But the PCBs might cost a lot, and before you spend that money on a "not guaranteed to work at all" DIY version you might as well just buy that extension cable/card posted earlier for probably even less money than the DIY version would cost(and have the guarantee that this thing works).
