well, i thought i'd try cutting a window in my hdd... (wd 200.) anyways, i've now made only about an inch cut and have used 3 dremel cutoff wheels. The stuff is way too thick for a nibbler, i've tried the drill bit attachment too. Still not making too much progress with the cutting. Any ideas on how to cut it?

jigsaw should probably do it, or maybe an angle grinder ;)

Yup used a jigsaw on mine, perfect for the job. Just be careful how you hold it down, i clamped mine a little too hard in the vice...still fits tho.

Possibly keep it retro and use a junior hacksaw with a fine toothed blade? Might have issues getting it in there (ohh err) depending on where you're cutting.

once i bought a $50 oxy acetelyne torch. my mom made me return it in fear that i would burn the house down :waah: i've always wanted a plasma cutter...but i did eventually get it cut with a hacksaw and about 20 fiber cutoff wheels :D i'll post pics friday...maybe earlier...i have finals next week so i'll be busy

got some photos of the progress on my hdd window
i used about 6 cutoff wheels (for what the hacksaw couldn't get)

here is my disassembled and partially cut hdd window.

    OOOH....shiny

used rubber pieces to prevent the clamp from ruining the seal and shape of the "lid"

cutoff wheels before cutting and my dremel

    started using hacksaw

those nerds @ western digital use 2 layers of metal :wallbash:

what's left of my once very big cutoff wheels. i just need to cut out the corners and file/sand now......sry for the rediculously large images....too lazy to resize them...i gotta figure out how to make my digital cam take low quality pics

OK, first: Please resize your pics!

Next, I hope you don't plan on doing anything useful with that HDD. Now you've opened it, it's "display purposes only"...

wish they would put tutorials on using dig cameras on the labels instead of useless manufacturer data :duh:

perhaps there's a reason they use 2 layers of metal?

edit: that's 8.8 MEG! of images and for what??????! :wallbash: :wallbash:

ADSL feeling like a 56kbps line connection at a bad time. Aarggh

Shouldn't the rest of your hardrive suppose to be in the bathroom with a plastic wrap covering the exposed areas?

    i said uber big

EDIT: i finally got to resizing the images (2 hours after i originally posted them)
sorry for the inconvenience, especially the 56k'ers. I gotta find out how to take low res pics with my cam. also, anyone know of a better place to put the images. right now i'm using angelfire (which doesnt allow hotlinking so i have to use anonymizer)
