^^^ What he said. I agree with Crawford. Games are seriously lacking in imagination. While improved computer capabilities should open the gates for some really mindblowing stuff, we just get more of the boring same with tarted-up graphics. Very little stuff out there has the same impact on me as some of the stuff that was turned out in the late 80's and early 90's.
No, because many retro games are still addictively good --despite the limitations in graphics and performance. I think that when computer capabilities were limited, people had to pay more attention to gameplay to make the game appealing. With increased graphics and sound capabilities, they lost the plot a bit --concentrating on making things look pretty or "realistic" rather than considering the actual gameplay.
I had a thought on this as I was sitting here. Who can name a really innovative new game concept in the last couple of years? Me either. Now, most people will say that means that none have been released, but with as many games as come out in a year, I believe there have to have been some really innovative ones, but appearently no one bought them. Why do game companies keep shelling out the same old crap? Because consumers keep buying it. Maybe I'm completly wrong on this, but that's how it seems to me.
I myself really like the MGS series for it's great stories. I also liked the story in FF7, haven't played any other Final Fantasy games to comment on them. . . L J
Darn beaten to it. I'de also say the graphical MMORPG's are pretty new. Nintendogs, animal crossing. knights of the old republic. hell even donkey konga, eye toy, and buzz.
sig says it all... Most of the graphical games I play bore me. Unless the title follows a storyline I like and am interested in I probobly wont play it. One of the reasons I find MUDs so much fun is because of the massive worlds and continualy new characters that play you interact with. There's a creative depth to the game that make sit more entertaining then the best and most georgeous FPS (and its free to boot)
How about spore? That will be a pretty innovative game. Not all games have to be innoavative. Most movies aren't innovative, they follow a formula just like games. Just because all games aren't groundbreaking people feel that the industry is going down the shitter. I don't find that true. Lets look at HL2, FEAR, Splinter Cell, NFS:Most Wanted(which brought back the cops from a few years back),C&C Generals, all of theses games aren't innovative, but each one of them provide an entertaining experience. The way I see it as long as a game is worth playing, it's doing just fine. This discussion has been going on for a long time and will continue after we're 6 feet under, every few years this comes up.
