my dad wants to get one, but ont they last 18,000 hours?? before regassing?

If they dont, how much does re-gassing cost? would it be cheaper to get like a 5 year warranty?

Hmm. Maybe before you or your dad waste the best part of two grand, you could do a little research. The only person licensed to officially re-gas all UK plasmans is myself. I charge a flat rate of £30. Let me know :)

18,000 hours, 10 hours a day for six years (assuming you take a few weeks holiday) - you do do something other than watching TV with your life right?

    5 years actually ;)
    ((365 * 10) * 5) = 18250

    ((365 * 10) * 6) = 21900

ALTHOUGH their life expectancy is actually abput 20000 hours, so 6 years of 10 hrs a day is about right. and then the rest is bonus time.

you should get at least a good 8 - 10 years out of it (with regular re-gassing....;) )

Regassing is a MYTH. Plasma panels are sealed units, and cannot be remanufactured:

    http://www.avreview.co.uk/news/article/mps/UAN/3/v/3
    http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatvreviews/plasmatvpixel.html

Typical lifespans are comparable with CRT based sets. And the lifespan isn't '60,000 hrs and then drop dead' - it'll just loose some of it's brightness.

I have now had two plasma TVs, and have never had an issue with them. The first one (Philips) was sold as I upgraded to a higher res panel (Pioneer), not due to any deteriation in picture, and I had that one for nearly 3 years.

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
    ;)

Actually the Phillips plasma atm with the er...thing that phillips do that I've forgotten....PixelPlus, thats it, the plasma with pixel plus is a work of art. Shame the panel is so ugly. That Pana is a very nice screen, ESP. if they supply it in black......
    where's that drooling smiley....

Look, A plasma TV isn't just a panel of glass holding a swirling cloud of "clever" gas behind it, waiting for you to tell it which channel to look at. Each pixel has a tiny amount of gas in them. There's no special plug in port to fill the thing up with gas. If Dixon's tell you otherwise, which I am sure they will, they are lying. Total lies. You cannot re-gas a plasma. Clearly this is some half-baked idea from someone who has a small amount of knowledge (a dangerous thing) Plasma is superheated gas.

Tell Dixon's to stick their warranty. And then tell them to stick their overpriced Sony plasmas too. Panasonic and Samsung (and maybe JVC, and even the Hyundai on the rotating base) are the way to go. Take it from me. But don't take it from Dixons.
    Baby.

Hmm. Up it to about 1400 and you'll get a super pannel. Like I said, Panasonic, Samsung or JVC.

    http://www.hdtv.net/faq.htm

Basically, high res TV, in either 720 progressive scan lines, or 1080 interlaced lines. A normal standard def TV will be 525 lines (NTSC) or 625 lines (PAL).

HDTV isn't available in the UK yet. Sky have said they will begin broadcasting sometime in 2006. But if a TV is HDTV ready, it will be compatible with (able to display) the new transmissions when they start.

    off topic I know, sorry!!

    Hi all,

well im thinking about getting this LG
Because its a 44'' and its not too thick, a bit thicker than a plasma acutally. I was wondering if its like good for everything (future proof) and also if it had the DVI input (so u can do dvi to dvi - frm gfx card to tv)

Lemme know dudes, my dad wants to purchase this within the next 2-3 weeks. :D

Ok, look, I know I'm not a mod, and I don't mean to be mean, but

    1) This is the BARGAIN BIN not the "HELP COOL_DUDE BUY A TELLY" room. GRRRRR! :thumb:

    2) You seem to have an AWFUL lot of money to WASTE, seeing as even the easiest google ( :search: ) threw up this site which gives you a full tech spec on one of the tabs. Seriously mate, try a little bit. Nobody minds helping out, but try a little bit, eh? Please?

    3) I don't like rear projection TVs. The colours seem washed out, you have to be the right height to see them, the definition is poorer etc. For the same money you could get a good plasma at Richer Sounds, or the one on Ebuyer, which is where this thread began. Buy a plasma panel, get a cheap freeview box and hook it up. There. High definition pictures and a cheap TV tuner. Bangin'.

EDIT: Curse you GreatOldOne! Now one of my points is moot!
