What i'd like to do is have a live CD distro such as DSL play DivX movies from a remote windows share, a nice UI would be good too although not necessary really.

I have managed to get DSL to mount the share, but I can't work out how to get it to play DivX movies! I have no problems with other distros that i've used, probably because they are 'easier'.

If anyone could suggest how to accomplish this with DSL, and save the configuration to a USB memory stick so it doesn't have to be done on every boot, that would be a great help. Alternatively I am open to anything else that will do the job without a HDD, as the laptop i'm using doesn't have one.

    Thanks!

most live-cd dont have codec for avi, divx and wmp file. I think only mepis have them (i think there is a freespire and xandros version too)

On all of them you can use konqueror and write smb:/ in the adress bar, you will see the network. Normally it will work, but sometime you need a command line to mount the network. Ask here if it dont work i will explain how to do.

    edit: glider did the explication

I'm affraid you need to create your own Live CD for this (it's not that complicated, but not that easy too... Unless the Ubuntu Live CD offers a mediaplayer (which is more then possible)

If you have to make one yourself: On that Live CD you should put a media player (like mplayer, xine,...) and codecs (win32codecs), and samba, to mount the share.

Edit: for mounting (I don't know if it helps): mount -t smbfs //server/share /mountpoint

Apt-get work on the live-cd of ubuntu, it is easy to install all codec, but doing this at every boot...

OP: why don't you just install a Linux distro?

I did say that the laptop has no HDD, it died a while back and now I like how quiet it is.

I have tried the Ubuntu Live CD but it is far too heavy, it takes so long to boot and runs so slowly. Thanks for the suggestions though.

You could try geexbox if its only for playing divx etc. Plus it installs on cf cards quiet nicely so you get utter silence not even the cd rom.
