    Ola!

I fancy learning something new, i.e. Linux command line. Having sussed Oracle's VirtualBox I need a command line image please - recommendations welcome.

I've got Debian etc but they're all GUIs, and I wanna get hardcore :)

    Many thanks in advance!

    Cleggy.

What about Arch Linux? So hardcore it doesn't even have an installer.

ctrl+alt+f1 will switch you to CLI, you can also remove gui by typing "apt-get remove gdm3" as root (or not selecting it during install in the first place). Or does OS even having an option of GUI is too mainstream?
Also you could just ssh to your vm...

You guys are all legends, sincere thanks. Since I have Debian already I'll use the CTRL-ALT-F2 shortcut, and as I improve I'll try the other distros.

    Thanks again folks.

    Cleggy.

    Oh yes, command line goodness!

    10 PRINT "Eh?"
    20 GOTO 10

    Nevermind :)

Just an fyi you have access to several terminals this way F1 through to F6 I think. One of the F keys brings you back then to your gui interface.

Just install any distribution and work from a command line, there are a ton of guides for building various Linux boxes from source up as well.

At least if you have a guy you can read a guide at the same time as working in a terminal, you won't lose anything by having the gui.

I've made the same mistake a few times using tapatalk. The reply to button looks like the edit button so you end up quoting yourself and making the edit instead of actually editing the original post. :thumb:

Also screw the gui. Real men use lynx to surf the web

Just spend a few weeks configuring Cisco switches via the console port. You'll be hardcore before you know it :hehe:

As a more serious suggestion, I'll +1 the SSH to VM option. That method has come in pretty handy for me in the past :)

Thanks folks, never thought about SSHing even though I have a little experience using that to get onto my NAS.

As an aside I've downloaded further images including Android, Win XP and some really compact Linux distros. There's plenty of fun to be had!

SSH will be your long time friend. I think putty is one of my most used apps.
