I used my PS2 to play DVDs, still don't have a DVD player to this day.

I can understand why they put bluray in, not just for the film playback but to also give developers lots of room to play with.

What is the point in putting a DVD player in an Xbox and PS2 to give lots of space and not include a DVD playback function? None that I can see, which is why they did it.

I think Sony are aiming to make a profit on each console, whereas MS lose money with every console and make it back up in games, sony want to make money everywhere, hence the big price tag.

Personally, the blu-ray feature is not a bad selling point, but more from kids to parents rather than for technophiles. "Look dad, it does my games, but you and mom can watch really high quality movies on it, too!! Cheaper than a normal player!!" It actually introduces the entire technology of blu-ray to the masses much faster than it would be taken otherwise, so in that respect it's a pretty smart move.

As I said, though, that's not much a selling point for technophiles...most of us geeks will buy it because we like the console, or we won't buy it until it gets cheaper (let the early adopters pay the premium for us). We largely know the difference between blu-ray quality on a standard tv and standard DVD on a standard tv. I guess my point is, we aren't the target audience of that sales pitch or pricepoint.

Sony's first step is to get it into every house that there's a little jimmy or little bobby who's dad thinks his Sempron box cobbled from spare parts is "pretty darn blazin fast, huh? I had my buddy build it for me, he's really into computers!" You know the type, the one who sees you with a digital camera and asks you how many gigapixels it has, cause his has 14, and you just nod and smile. That subsidizes the price for us who know better, and pay based on either a) technology vs. cost, or b) game quality. Either way, we (the geek community) end up waiting or buy it because we really want it anyways based on its own merits, and they know it...so why waste the first marketing hype on us?

Not a 1000 Euros 1000 Dollars. It's all simple math.
This is how I see it, I figure to get the next greatest DX 10 PC rig with next gen video card and all trimming would cost me roughly 3000 minimum, just go to Dell and look at how much the XPS 600 renegade costs. Considering that the PS3 will be just as powerful as the next greatest PC gaming rig, I'm actually saving 2000 dollars which I can spend on a new HD TV.
So here's how I work out the math.
Great next gen PC Gaming Rig (aka Dell XPS 600 renegade) = 3000-5000 dollars
    PS3 + BluRay + New 50 " HD TV = 3000-4000 dollars
So in reality PS3 actually saves me roughly 2000 on gaming and I get a new HD TV and BluRay player. The choice is obvious with these next gen consoles its just not worth playing games on PC anymore.
Bye Bye PC gaming, it was a good run.

Dude speak for yourself, I've never waited for a gaming console in my life, and I'm just as much a geek as the rest of ya. Every good next gen console that ever came out had 1000 dollars of my money already earned.

I should have been more clear, I thought I specified earlier in the post...will edit for clarity. I meant that either we will wait, or we'll buy it on the merits that we're console lovers. Neither one requires or is helped in any way by further song and dance from Sony.

    Make more sense?

Yeah you're right even if they never advertised at all, they'd still have my money. Gotcha.

Well not goodbye forever, just until you have your PC upgraded enough, or when the prices come down.

I will be getting a PS3 when I have the money. So probably have to wait untill next year.

I actually use my PS2 as a DVD player all the time. Living in college and being able to save space by using it as a game console and DVD player is very nice.

    Served.

Sorry to re-post so soon, but you realize the XPS 600 Renegade is just under $10k and it doesn't support DX10 as it uses 4 7800GTX's.

Just a heads up, but good post otherwise. I plan on doing the same.
    PS3 and a new TV ***!!

Why is For The Win shortened to an acronymn (eff tee duble-you) blocked?
