Sometime ago I started a thread on using an actual FDR for a mod but not to build a mini itx pc.

Took me sometime to get a reasonably priced and suitable ext DAS (not NAS as it would be too pricey) and took out just the sata to USB3.0/esata backplane I chose it over easily available backplanes because they either have a mini-sas or e-sata or 4 sata ports and require a molex plug and I need to be able to connect this to the laptop and PC.

HDDs used: 2x 3TB WD Red

Now I am facing a little uncertainty over how to proceed.

0696 shows the back of the FDR and where the data connector used to be.

Notice the fan is at the top and the usb port is at the bottom?

    Option 1

The shaded area is where I plan to install an intake 80mm fan externally as the backplane PCB sits quite close to the back of the FDR unless I use a super slim 80mm fan.

Then mount the HDDs and bracket upside down. But this means that I have to use epoxy only and no bolts, screws etc as the external orange box is a relatively tight fit with the inner chassis. (0700.jpg)

This would mean that the cuts to the FDR will be rather clean. Cutting a bigger hole for the 80mm at the bottom and a small hole at the top for the USB port. At the same time, cut small vents on the top side, near the "Flight data recorder" words

At the same time, warm air will be stuck at the top and might exit via the vents.

    Option 2

Invert option 1. Fan at the top on the back, externally unless it's slim enough. Vents on the bottom, near the "Flight data recorder" words

But this leaves a big hole for the usb and esata port.

    Questions:
    1. Do I need to install a fan and/or vents if it's just 2 WD red drives that will not be running 24/7
