Basically this is what i came back to today: and this... and this... I have a leather band on my right wrist which had stained my laptop a bit in the effected area, now my g/f being the kind hearted person she is (also the only reason why death hasnt gotten her yet) was cleaning and discovered this stain particularly difficult, long story short...she used nail varnish remover which has now annialated that part of my laptop peeling off the enamel and staining the underneath with rubbings fmor the other parts... I have instantly used a damn wet rag with cold water and wiped away any signs of the remover but its still peeling a little on the edges of where there is enamel. The real fun part of this is....I am selling the laptop and said to my friend they can have it on 1st August, I have till then to get this mess sorted out which i can only assume now would be replacment, is something like this going to cost a fortune? Or can i salvage this damage? (seriously doubt it but i will love anyone that knows a way) [edit] just found this...LINK and that seems a lot for what i'm getting, anybody else? [/edit]
looks like its 59$ + 18$ to get sent to uk, then i've gotta fix it, crap! thankgod the dollar is crap against the pound at the moment! 35£ ish i think its gonna cost
Surely it's $149 for the keyboard + top assembly, then $18 for shipping, which is ~£85, plus the cost of the T8 and T6 screwdrivers to fix it... Still a damnsight cheaper than getting a new MacBook though.
I knew there was a reason I was against plastic macbooks from the get go (ibooks too but to a lesser extent they're virtually indestructible!)
Ouch... that's got to hurt. Establish ground rule no. 1: "Nobody touches my geek sh*t". trust me: it will save your relationship.
QFT. This will save all your relationships ever and always. If it looks geeky they stay the hell away from it unless they're sure you won't mind them touching it. It sounds a bit facist but it saves the anger at coming home and finding they've installed some spyware laden screensaver pack or replaced your mouse icon with a sheep that bah's everytime you right click.
Replacing the casing is all that is needed. Fortunately, it isn't too hard to replace but sourcing the part for it can be difficult (blame Apple for that). Lucky for your g/f it isn't an expensive lesson to be learnt. Things like this do happen when people are unaware of the consequences (a bit like my cousin using a 1800w vacuum cleaner to clean dust from inside a computer, which consequently killed the PSU, destroyed every fan and pulled loose a few cables). And in the case of lending things to people, you should be aware that things like general wear & tear to total loss can happen. As much as I can understand your annoyance, I'd personally overlook small incidents like these. There are better things to look forward to in life than to get annoyed over some cosmetic damage to a laptop that can be replaced
The metalish top of my MBP is equally bad - scratched to hell by my watch. And it's plastic underneath a very thin layer of metal, so it's even more glaringly obvious.
Definately - no need to make a mountain out of a molehill imho, in the end it's only a bit of discoloured/damaged plastic, and she was doing it as a nice gesture by the sounds too!
like the guy who is buying it has to look forward to getting a now damaged laptop? sure its cosmetic but would you accept a car if the dealer had an accident and spilled paint thinner all over it? yes a car is more expensive but lets face it, its still just cosmetic damage.
If you was gong to sell it on (or anything) you would want it to look worth money so then it would be worthwhile replacing the cover. but I personally would leave it.
Yes, but it's a completely different situation. A car is much more expensive, and what does your relationship to a car dealer mean to you? Surely your gf is more important than a mere £80-odd quid (at most)?
I understand your point but anything that can be literally replaced with "money" can be replaced. Sure, there are limits to how much money is used for replacement... some people are well off, some aren't. Accidents happen and are part of our every day lives. You don't have to source a brand new component for the MacBook, there are plenty of good condition second hand parts on eBay for around £25 + delivery, which does an equally good job. For that price, it is a small price to pay for an accident and inconvenience
