I am having trouble installing new Icybox IB-290 Docking station. Have purchased 2.5" WD Scorpio 320gb HD to go with it which I have initialised and formatted. HD enclosure that came with docking station connects fine via USB but when connected via docking station which uses a eSATA/SATA interface my system does not detect the drive either when connected prior to switching on or while system running. I am using an ASUS P5N32-E SLI Motherboard based system running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have upgraded to the latest forceware drivers. Have I missed something, done something or is the enclosure broken. Thanks in advance.
Sorry if i misunderstand you, Are you saying that you have connected the HDD to the docking station, and that when its connected via USB it works no problem but when its connected via eSATA it doesn't work? If so its probably the eSATA cable that isn't working.
Looking at the connections on the motherboard's rear I/O panel, there's no mention of SATA - never mind eSATA: 1x PS/2 Keyboard port(purple) 1x PS/2 Mouse port(green) 1x Optical + 1 x Coaxial S/PDIF Output 2x LAN (RJ45) port 4x USB 2.0/1.1 ports 1x IEEE1394a port And the internal connections include: 3x USB 2.0 connectors supports additional 6 USB 2.0 ports 1x Floppy disk drive connector 1x IDE connector for two devices 6x SATA connectors 8x Fan connector: 1 x CPU / 1 x Power Fan / 1 x Chassis / 5 x Optional 1x Front Panel Audio connector (on SupremeFX audio card) 1x IEEE1394a connector 1x S/PDIF output connector 1x Chassis Intrusion connector 24-pin ATX Power connector 8-pin ATX 12V Power connector System panel connector Again... there's no mention of eSATA. So how were you able to connect the enclosure to your PC via eSATA, when the motherboard has no native eSATA ports?
You can get SATA to eSATA cables can't you? I thought eSATA only added power and a locking connector. And maybe some shielding or something for longer runs.
Thank you everybody for your replies so far, I will clarify some of the points raised, The enclosure has both USB and esata on the rear. I have connected via USB and this is fine and I have not been able to test the esata as pointed out my motherboard does not have this but I will look to get a converter to try and test it on the internal sata ports. The enclosure came with a 3.5" bay docking station which connects to the internal SATA ports and is powered by a molex power connecter. It is via this the hard drive is not being detected. At present I am unsure whether the fault is on the enclosures chipset or the docking station connector. I will try to source a converter as mentioned to confirm this. Thank you again but I am starting to fear it is broken unless I have missed something.
hi mate, just to let you know ive recently bought the same one of those icybox enclosures and docking station combos and the sata isnt working for me either, on internal docking station or external through esata. it works fine on usb... my mobo is an asus P5N-E SLI this is the enclousre in question http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=788375 did you ever sort it jubei?
well i got it working on esata buy updating the driver for jmicron the jmicron chipset on my mobo. Still no joy with the docking station part i think it might be a power problem rather than sata as the power light should come on even if the sata isnt working...
Hey, Ive just bought one of these icy box docking stations too and ive got the same problem. Works fine with usb externally, but when plugged in to the docking station the power light comes on but there is no activity on the hdd light on the left hand side. Its not seen in bios either when rebooted with the drive in situ. Did any of you guys find a solution or did you just returned them? Cheers. p.s. when i was fiddling around with the settings (i.e. whether the power switch was on or off on the back of the enclosure) it did rocognise the drive once, but after a reboot it never saw the drive again, whether the switch was on or off, or if the drive was already in on boot or inserted after.
