hi guys, i was just reconnecting the power supply to the computer in my room i had disconnected it a while back i cant remember why but anyway i plugged it ll back in and when i pressed the power button all the fans spun around once and then stopped and nothing else happened, i thought it might be the power supply so i took one out of an old sony pc that i had so i plugged the sony PSU in and the pc booted up fine but then i noticed that an LED on the motherboard was flickering then i could smell a burning sorta smell sorta like plastic burning.so i turned everything back off. Now i really need your suggestions as to what i should do next have i ******d the computer and both the power supplies? Any help really appreciated i have sold this PC so i really hope that it is not screwed.
the psu that showed this problem is most likely assassinating other components... and it the components that doesn't work with a good known psu are most likely victims of the bad psu
Did you try to boot the PC with the first PC again? Secondly, the sony PSU *may* have been non standard, which might have nuked the mobo..
holy **** im dead, what about the ram, cpu etc.???? and also if i put the sony PSU back in the sony PC will it screw that PC as well??
You need to check the wiring on the ATX connector, compare the "old" psu and the sony. If its the same, then its a standard supply, and the board was toasted before you added the sony. As for ram, cpu etc it depends. Chances are the mobo will have burnt out before the CPU/ram did.. however it might not have.
i cheked the 2 PSU's and the sony one had one less wire going into it than the other one so i guess that means that it is not a standard one? can i put it back into the sony pc?
With a nonstandard supply, I doubt it would even boot; you'd see fire or nothing before the POST. The missing wire on the Sony is likely something that's no longer required, probably -5V or -12V. Are the colours on all the other wires the same? My prime suspect is the original supply... I'd try the drives first in another computer with a quality supply that has overload/short protection to ensure that they don't damage anything else. This is, of course, just precautionary. If it didn't turn off by itself, then you might have saved the CPU/RAM/GFX by shutting it down quickly. I wouldn't run the motherboard again, however, in case the power regulation circuitry has crapped out or become damaged... that can do some funny things to expensive items like processors and RAM. Purchase or acquire a new motherboard and try the old processor etc in that (with a new power supply). Do not use the older one in case it causes further damage.
ok thanks very much ill try and borrow a motherboard. Wot do u think about the sony PSU tho screwed? or not?
The sony PSU sounds fine, can't see any harm in putting it back in the sony PC, from what you have said, it sounds like the original PSU may have buggered your motherboard before the sony PSU even touched it. On a Side note, are you sure that it wasn't just n LED that bit the dust? my friend had that on a socket A Epox board, one of the LEDs caught fire, so he wipped the AC cord out, opened it and threw a cup of cola on it (not the wisest thing to do, i know) luckily when I went round later, I gave the mobo a quick drying session in the boiler cupboard, soldered a new LED in and it was fine.
yeh i suppose it could have been and LED but i dont really wanna plug the mobo back in because if that isn't it, i dont want to destroy my ram/cpu. Cheers for the suggestions tho
