I need help with my connection.. Since we've moved to hell (Biggin Hill), We haven't got terrestrial TV or broadband... or a 56K connection that lasts more than 10 minutes. See, the problem is, after a certain amount of time, the modem stops sending/recieving data, even though AOL (yes, AOL, but what else can you use on an NTL line if NTL's dial up ISP isn't avaiable here? pathetic, i know ) reckons everything is fine and dandy (AKA, It's still connected, but not able to load anything). When I select sign-off in AOL, it won't bring up the box (because the box has HTML content which stops the box appearing if the HTML isn't loaded). It's like someone's cut the phone wire. I eventually re-connect and it's fine until the modem stops again. My Old ISP and AOL reckoned it was because I was using a software modem. So I replaced it with a hardware modem. The problem is still there. I reckon it's line noise because cable phone lines are generally crap, But I need a fix, because I can't get this line converted to BT (because BT quoted £100 for line installation and £25 for the engineer to come out and sort it). If it doesn't get fixed soon I'll go crazy!! :cries:
It most likely is not the modem, as it has been replaced already. Is this a new problem? Have you had the lines checked for noise? AOL is the worst for tech support. They will blame everything on you, without checking anything, each and everytime...anyone that has worked tech support for a computer company knows this. I would say that most likely the problem is on their side or in the phone lines....I would say its time to choke up the money for whatever BT is.
Shadowspawn - Yes, Funnily enough, I had a cable line in my old house (Telewest) and that used to suffer the same problem but not as much - but that was made up for - half the time you'd hear a dialtone from the modem speakers but the modem would say there is no dialtone?!. NTL has a generally pants service, They caused us £250 in damages due to their own bungles, and offered us a tenner for compensation Their boxes crash and the picture quality, even on digi-cable, is awful (probably due to compression) There's no line noise that I can hear with the digital phone. I've noticed a strange problem - when uploading files via FTP, The transfer gets about 20-70% done then the transfer sorta pauses and the transfer rate steadily drops until it gets to 0.00. This also results in no data being recieved by the modem... (webpages won't load, downloads fail, AOL won't sign off etc)
