XDA and other sites are asking for help in stopping The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). The way this will work is that copyright holders will have the ability to more easily shut down sites (with mere accusations and without due process) that *might* be in violation of copyright laws. http://www.xda-developers.com/annou...8th-at-8am-you-can-help-bring-us-back-online/ I think this is an erosion of freedom on the internet. Please do what you can to support sites like XDA in their fight to stop this. Reddit is also in this, you can view their page here: http://blog.reddit.com/2012/01/stopped-they-must-be-on-this-all.html
My senator has been contacted about this subject, hopefully everyone contacts theirs and voices their opinions on this subject. First the BS in the NDAA and now this, i dont like where this is going.
I've already voted in nigh on every petition I can find that will accept UK residents' signatures, Above that; All I can do is keep ontop of the news and lend support where I can.
Yeah, there are a lot of sites that close down on 18jan. Will bit tech too? Probably not, due to it being part of a larger company that does not want to appear supporting piracy or freedom of speech or more such nonsens. ... A shame...
From the government website linked above: Exactly how is US legislation going to stop "foreign thieves" from stealing America's intellectual property? In other news, Wikipedia will be going dark in protest.
+rep for doing something about an issue which you feel strongly about. Even leaving a quick comment briefly stating your opinion is getting your voice heard. My senator's already voiced support for OPEN, but my representative is still undecided. Time to get writing!
