What is the standard width plexi to use for a case window ? I am planning on etching a design into it with a dremel and having a CCFL or LED placed on the edge to light up the etch. Would I need to place the dremel in some sort of stand to keep the depth of the etch uniform or does it not matter it the etching is all bumpy and at different levels. TIA
Etching uses acid, you describe grinding I dont think this mod could be done with a dremel and look good after. One way would be to cover the plexi in etch resist and paint the design on with suitable acid. Dunno if that would work, have a look here for PCB etching stuff (for etching away layers of copper from plastic) which *might* work.
You can etch using acid, a drill or something along that line, or a vinyl applique. I've only seen a couple people use a dremel, but they did it very well; it's hard to judge if it'd be a good idea or not. I think most window kits give plastic that's about 1/8 of an inch thick.
etching technically doesn't have to be with acid, as in linoleum etching. Anyways you can do it with a dremel the depth is not the issue as much as getting straight lines since you can't file it out afterwords. You can buy window appliques for that etched look, but I'm not sure how many offer custom appliques I think your best would be either acid etching as in pcb board style stuff, or dremel
