I've just fitted a DVD burner, an OEM NEC3520 that came at the right price but with no software.

I've got OEM Nero 5.5, bundled with my Plextor CD-R, but it doesn't show the DVD on the "Choose Recorder" list - is my OEM Nero crippled to Plextor drives only?

If so, is a Nero upgrade still the way2go in best software?

Hmmm thats a bit dodgy, i have the same OEM version that i got with my Plextor drive and it sees my LG DVD writer fine, maybe 5.5 can't see that drive as its new  So an upgrade is probably the only way, d/l the trail and see if that can see the drive :thumb: .

Yea, Nero 5x does that with bundled copies. I had one that would only be used with Liteon drives. Installed it on everyone in the house though cause we all had liteons at the time :D

Nero 6 is very nice though, lets you burn >1 disk at once and continue to use nero.

Currently using version 6.0.0.20. I ordered the OEM version from Scan for £2 odd when I last bought hardware.

Using it on my Yamaha and Samsung CD-Writers and it works fine

Although, so far, I prefer the previous version as it allowed me to edit my music tracks (start / end position, delete segments from the middle or even split a track in two) before recording so that I could get rid of annoying intros/outros when creating discs which I don't seem to be able to do in this newer version of Nero...

I thought I'd got somewhere, tried 'Autodetect drive' in Nero, came up as unknown, put Nero CD in to test. Looking promising. But it's still not listed and 'Autodetect' now greyed out. :wallbash:

It created a results file & said I could email it to Nero, no mention of write speeds in it. :sigh:
Nero downloads is the slowest I know. Like being back on 56k. :miffed:

The good news, the shop will sell me Nero 6 OEM for £2.75 if I haven't lost the receipt. :D

I don't trust any other CD/DVD burning software other than Nero for basic data or audio.

    Using 6.6.0.5 here :)

I found that as well I am trying to download the 4 patches and getting speeds of 10.5 kb/sec, on a 1 mb connection

I had the same problem, got Nero with my LG CDRW, then a while later I got a Samsung DVDRW, and Nero didn't work. In the end I got a new version of Nero, and it was happy.

Downloading Nero from their server in Germany I get terrible speeds and sometimes fails. Try one of the other 2 (USA and Japan as far as I can remember) I get max speeds...

There is a way around this problem as long as you don't mind using express.

Go to the nero site and find the update section then download the update which happens to come with Nero express which will show and use your cd burner.

Its how i managed to use it anyway.

Germany wouldn't even start, Japan was very slow, US around 16kb/s but lost it twice after about 20Mb. :wallbash:

And Firefox downloader doesn't Resume. :miffed:

monkeyville, I've got the latest 5 update (shows as 5.5.10.56 Plextor) with Express, still only the Plextor on the target list.
Not sure how the local shop's OEM Nero works, they sell same stock code with any burner.

And as a postscript, from the German NEC site,
    :sigh:
