I was wondering how easy would it be to mod a standard plug socket into a pc case, because every time I come to plug something in I have to scramble around the back of my pc. I know the sensible thing to do would be to just use an extension but this would be even more convenient and cool. Any ideas.
if you mean a standard 3 pin 240V plug socket, its actually very easy to do so. but do be warned, 240vAC is a big nasty thing when it runs up your arm and sets fire to your hair. be *extremely* carefull, the last thing you want is 240v running through your case, it will fry your pc and have a good go at hurting you. if your aware of the risks, and want to do it anyway, its dead easy. have a look in your local hardware store and you should find plug sockets, the ones you want are white boxes (dont get the ones with the white front and metal backplates) you should also be able to look around for a male euro socket (the three pin sockets like on the back of your psu). you should be able to mod the three pin socket onto the back of your pc, and have a cable (*proper* grey mains cable, not just psu cable) leading to wherever, to the plug socket. you want something like this on the back of your case. with some cable going to a basic white plug socket. its not that hard, but i really should stress, 240V is not something to mess with, and you dont want anything bare inside your case. if your case gets live with 240V AC, you can kiss your components goodbye.
Thanks for your reply, After much thought i have decided that im just not confident enough to do it, and the last thing i want to do is fry my pc, because im not exactly in a financial position to replace it if i i do at the moment. Still maybe for the future, still think its a cool idea. Wonder how long it will be until they invent wireless power. Just imagine you could have a power desk, place you mobile phone on it and it automatically charges itself, never have to replace the batterys on your wireless keyboard/mouse. God that would be cool.
they have been using this stuff on electric toothbrushes for a while , magnetic recharging build that into your desk!
