Might be worth getting trained by your local council. They're always on the lookout for new people to train. They'll pay for vocational training where you'll earn some money while still learning, and you'll have a job straight after finishing. You're only obliged to do 2 years (IIRC), before you can quit, and start a business or whatever.

Note, this is how it works with Darlington Borough council, but YMMV. Did my work experience as a plumber/gas fitter. Got my central heating and electrical problems all sorted out in my house thanks to free advice, expertise and parts :).

Just remember before you commit yourself to this career path that part of the job as a plumber is clearing blocked toilets.
Its bad enough clearing your own, at least that's your responsibility but to have to unbung someone else's u-bend when you've got god knows what blocking it - your a braver man than I am if you want to have that as part of your C.V.

True, but because most people think that way, he'll always be guaranteed a job with it: nobody else wants to do it! :)

Same reason it's a good time to go into carpentry or mechanics: there's a shortage.

Incidentally: your surname is Payne, so it doesn't really matter what problems life presents you with as long as you carry a pair of Berettas around with you all the time.

Just do a PHD already. It should be the ambition of everyone with the surname Payne to become a Dr.

Actually I used to be a "Drain Surgeon" :hehe: and the type of work can vary quite a bit. Service work gets you lots of variety and the occasional nasty job. New construction has less surprises and no sewage, but it got boring fast for me (& it's all about speed not quality).

One day I was working at a house and got talking with the owner who was a lab-tech at the hospital. I joked that we both dealt with the occasional stool sample but the difference was I had thicker rubber gloves and was pushing it away with a plunger rather than examining the contents up close with a scalpel. :p

P.S. IMHO apprenticeship is the way to go. (but I have no idea of what the options are where you are)

Apprenticeship or vocational course via college. Almost followed that route myself.
