free upgrade to the fastest speed the line to your house supports :D

only downside is there are now "limits" ( you are only punished if you exceed the limits 3 months in a row.)

anyway you can read the details for your selfs.

yeah looks like I might be able to get 8meg :eeek:
still only 256k up though :sigh:

Can't wait till April problem is I leave my uni house in May :duh:

Its seems like a fair deal, better than them killing your connection totally or charging you extra. Hopefully they will tell you when you are at say 50% of your usage.

Well, if you stay paying the same for your 1meg connection, you could theoretically be upgraded, for free, to 8mb with a 50gb/month fair usage.

I hate they way they get around calling their cap a cap by saying 'fair usage'. I'd rather keep my 2Mb uncapped than have 8Mb capped.

It's not a cap though. You can go well over, say, 50gb in a month, as long as you don't do it 3 months in a row. If you do, it's suggested that the connection is limited to 128k for the next month but is then put back up to max the month after, so you still have a connection and can d/l to your hearts content.

Seems bloody great to me, my whole house only get through less than 20GB a month as it is now.

So its basically a free super-speed increase for us :D

Only problem is that BT wont be uprading all the exchanges to 8 mb in April most of us will have to wait until September for that but we will have 2mb to keep us happy in the mean time.

on a one meg connection you get what, 320gigs a month if your maxed out 100%

now i'm not saying i never download COMPLETELY LEGAL AND LEGITIMATE dvd's on our house's 2meg line, but i don't tend to exceed the useage of 320gigs a month, not by a long way, its rare i'll download a dvd worth a day (which is only 150gig for the mathematically impared) so i think these fair useage policies will be grand, if only i could get 8meg on our line :(

(and even if your worried about exceding your limit just get a nice layer 3 managed switch even if its only 10mbit to whack between your network switch + router, you can use that to throttle the bw down to 2mbit again, but remove it when u know u need that file faster!, such switches cost about £30 on ebay, a mate just got a 24port-er 100mbit jobbie for £40 with delivery, i would say these are essential for student houses).

Has anyone found a website that tracks which exchanges are on the list for the maxdsl conversion? and when they're going to happen?

Related to the thread but not my post above

The link suggests that Plusnet are due to upgrade (for free?) most customers to 2mb. When will this happen??! It also suggests that, as BT trial the 4mb and 8mb maxdsl, that Plusnet will trial it as well. Not sure when it'll happen though :eyebrow: Same time? (ie April)

there used to be a number for BT people to call and of course people found out. I can't remember it now as it was back in the day.

I only know that the Sheffield exchange is being upgraded as it was on some website which I can't remember the URL off. I'm no help I know

I don't even think PlusNet know that yet judging by the posts on ADSL Guide or if they do they're not allowed to tell us.

I think that with the 8mb connections there will be 1m upstream or there abouts.

    IIRC it's 1mb at 8 down or 1.5mb at 7 down.
