Earlier this year, Plusnet informed it's customers it was handing over the running of it's email service to a third party - nothing to worry about, seamless transition, blah blah..

So now it has happened and the new people, Greenby, have mailed everyone to say everything will be hunky dory for the next 24 months then they'll be charging us for the service. I mean, it's not much - £15 a year - and I'm not here to whine about the amount, but it was already being provided as part of my service with Plusnet.

I spoke with Plusnet and their take is "oh, we never actually charged you for email, it was just kinda thrown in there, so there's no legal recourse". Basically, eff right off - and It was this response that really ****ing wound me up. I went on to say, the provision of email is probably a big part of why people stay with a provider - not wanting the fuss of moving across all their email, subs and contacts to a new address, but the policy drone on the other end of the line had clearly reached the end of her prepared script and she started repeating herself.

Of course, I cannot see any reference to provision of email on my new contract, obviously, but I've had this account and email address for the better part of thirty years. My contention is that I'm three months into a 24 month contract with Plusnet and I believe they are in breach of contract, or acting in bad faith at least and I should be able to walk away. She was very quick to respond to that, saying I will be held to the remainder of my contract.

Clearly I'm not a lawyer, nor do I expect that any of you are, but I'm wondering what you guys think.

    Cheers

What I think is, use an email service that is not linked to any ISP, so you can chop and change ISPs without having to worry about email. I've been using Hotmail/Outlook for around 20 years, not perfect but, does the job.

I mean that's a good idea but @David has had it for 30 years so that horse has bolted, lived its life, died and been turned into glue since then.

@David . Really don't know about this one mate. If it's not in the contract then I presume it's not easy but a legal eagle may say it was perfectly understandable for it to be assumed it was bundled in the contract as it has been for you for n number of years and so it is a breach.

E: Damn, I got one of my addresses last century. Last frickin century. I hate feeling old.

Unfortunately its not part of the service you've paid for, and they're still providing it free for the length of your current contract, so although annoying there's nothing illegal here. I've been using plusnet on/off for 20 years and I didn't even know they offered email, I don't think its something they even advertised, so you can't hold them to that. It may be annoying, but they're still by far the best ISP IMO.

£15 a year does seem a bit rich though!
