From the Guardian Unlimited: After speed cameras, road humps and mobile phone bans, there could be more bad news for Britain's motorists. Police are urging Ministers to give them the power to stop vehicles by remote control. In what will be seen as yet another example of the in-creasing power of Big Brother, drivers face the prospect of their cars being halted by somebody pushing a button. The police lobby is being led by Superintendent Jim Hammond of Sussex police, who chairs an Association of Chief Police Officers technology working group which is examining the idea. 'Providing an effective means to remotely stop a vehicle is fast becoming a priority,' Hammond told a European conference. 'The development of a safe and controlled system to enable remote stopping has the potential to directly save lives.' However, Bert Morris, deputy director of the AA Motoring Trust said: 'People don't like the idea of Big Brother taking over their driving. In years to come that might be acceptable, but it's very, very important that there's a step-by-step approach.' Full article here ...
Or how to help the car jackers... Mr. Villain builds hisself a remote control unit and then he can stop anyone whenever and where ever he likes. The real villains are going to bypass this anyway, just like they don't need a key to start a car. I'm sure the crime of deactivation is going to be peanuts compared to Drug smuggling, Armed robbery etc. One again Mr Plod has a bright idea that is only going to affect the law abiding 'cos the bad guys aren't going to give a monkey's wotnot.
What happens if it mis-applies at 70mph on the inside lane of the A1? Far too dangerous, in my opinion. *n
I shall invent one of these & stop the boom-boys in their tracks. mebbe Mr Wright will finance my research
Now that would take all the fun out of car chases wouldn't it? Imagine Gone in Sixty Seconds if the cops just pressed a button and stopped all those cars..
i can see it going dredfully wrong & people dying tbh if anything liek that was fitted on my car i would find a way to disable it i dont care if somone has nicked my car & is joyriding it you cut the power you could cut abs, power steering the lot & i can see it beigna case of if the engine is force to stop & its in gear it could lock the front wheels meaning the rover has 0 control
The US army has been testing a devise that sends out a electrical signal or somthing that basicly disables the car. Its not somthing that any joe blow can just go to radio shack and build. Its not that bad of an idea against car jackers or other criminals. I dont think the auto industry would take it if they were forced to build a devise that shut down your car.
you mean that thing in 2fast2furious? that they fire at the cars then it disables em? The police/goverment are just trying to punish drivers because they are too lazy to bother to catch real vilians, like murdrers, rapists and peados. All the money from speed cameras goes to the police doesnt it? and not back on to improving our roads.
An EMP wave will stop most modern cars. It disables all electrical equipment. Only cars without electronics will keep on driving. Thats the thing with a nuclear blast. Nobody will be able to escape from the impact zone in their car. It will not start
vbut if you kill all the electronics you kill everything, abs, traction, control, power steering, airbags, seatbelt tensioners & what happens if they get the wrong car & you crash spectacularly it is a stupid idea that has been ill fought out & i will personally do everything (legal or not) to my vehicles to stop sommat like this just for my won safet
Haha, 'save lives'? Just like the speed cameras are meant to..? but blatantly haven't dropped the amount of deaths on our roads? Sigh. More stupid new-labour / police crap.
There was some thing on the discovery channel where they were testing an RC car which is fired out the front of a patrol car and it has two antenna that rub against the bottom of the car (EMP) & disable it. Another"in the works" device had a spike on the patrol car which went through the boot and opened up (like a harpoon) then all the patrol car had to do was lock brakes... (very dangerous, what about things in the boot... petrol cans... people etc )
lol, i thought people as soon as i read that. its not really a good idea if the car the police are chasing happens to be a car bomb
It should only be allowed in certain places... I.E quiet roads. Areas that can be sealed off easily. It would need some sort of higher level decision about it. I.E A patrol car simply can't enter the reg plate and hit stop. It would have to be authorized from an airbourne unit etc.
